Hello everyone,
I am planning to customize the color of my Billy bookshelf doors, so I don’t want to stick with the standard colors but instead create a unique look. My specific question is: which materials, techniques, and preparations do you recommend if I want to paint or change the color of the BILLY doors without damaging the surface or losing their functionality?
Are there any special paints or primers that have proven effective? Also, is there anything I should particularly keep in mind regarding the door installation or the modification process? I have already done some online research, but practical tips from the community are always more helpful. Thanks in advance for your support!

To ensure a durable color change for your BILLY doors, I recommend the following detailed steps:
1. Remove the doors from the frame and place them on a flat, dust-free work surface.
2. Sanding is an important prerequisite. Use fine sandpaper (around grit 240) to dull the glossy surface and create a good base for adhesion.
3. Be sure to use a suitable primer for plastic or melamine-coated surfaces—BILLY doors are often made of melamine-coated MDF boards. A primer designed for plastic improves the adhesion of subsequent layers.
4. For painting, I recommend acrylic paint or powder coating if you are using a spray gun. Alternatively, there are special spray cans for furniture and plastic, which adhere well regardless of the application method.
5. After painting, let the doors cure for a few days before mounting them.
One small side question: Are your doors glazed with glass or made entirely of wood/MDF? This can affect the preparation somewhat.

One quick side question: Are your doors glazed or fully made of wood/MDF?Thanks for the detailed instructions! My doors are made entirely of a solid wood core with a white melamine finish, no glass. That might make some things easier – it would be great if you have any tips on how to get a smooth surface, in case I end up using a brush or roller.
Regarding paint application: Both rollers and brushes basically work, but they require very careful preparation.
Tip: Use high-quality foam rollers or very fine brushes to avoid streaks. I also recommend applying several thin coats instead of one thick coat. This way, you achieve a smoother surface.
Also keep in mind to lightly sand between each coat (e.g., very fine 400-grit sandpaper) to ensure a smooth finish afterward.
Finally, a matte or satin-clear coat seals the surface, providing better protection and a uniform appearance.

That's great that you’re sharing such detailed information here! 🙂
I recently treated my BILLY doors with spray paint in RAL colors, and it worked really quickly and neatly. It was really important to sand them thoroughly and, above all, to paint them outdoors to avoid drips or dust settling on the paint.
And hey, it’s really fun to creatively transform your own furniture piece like that—keep it up! 🙂
