Hello everyone,

I recently bought some IKEA Malm furniture and would like to repaint it myself to give it a unique look. However, I have read that Malm furniture is made from particleboard with a melamine coating, which makes painting more challenging because the paint does not adhere easily. My question is: How can I paint Malm furniture myself so that the new paint sticks well, lasts a long time, and does not damage the piece? What specific preparation steps are necessary (e.g., sanding, priming), and are there any special techniques or materials that have proven effective? I am aiming for a smooth and high-quality finish and would also appreciate tips on choosing the right paint or varnish. Thank you in advance for your advice!

Hello,

A key challenge when painting Malm furniture, as you correctly pointed out, is the smooth melamine coating. This coating prevents conventional paints from adhering permanently. Here is a step-by-step guide that has proven effective in practice:

1. Cleaning: First, thoroughly clean the surface to remove grease, dirt, or dust. This can be done using a mild dish detergent and warm water.

2. Sanding: Lightly sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper (grit 120 to 180). It is important to only roughen it slightly to help the paint adhere better without damaging the melamine board too much.

3. Priming: Next, apply a special primer designed for smooth surfaces—a primer suitable for melamine-coated surfaces is essential here.

4. Painting: Use high-quality acrylic or alkyd paint suitable for furniture. It is best to apply several thin coats and allow each coat to dry thoroughly.

5. Sealing (optional): For increased durability and protection, a furniture sealer or clear varnish can be applied as a final layer.

Avoid shortcuts such as skipping sanding or priming, as this can cause the paint to peel very quickly.

Regarding materials: Choose fine-grit sandpaper, a primer specifically for coated surfaces, and water-based acrylic paints for ease of use and low odor.

I hope this guide helps you achieve a long-lasting result.

You really need to do this carefully. At first, I made the mistake of sanding too hard – then the surface looks uneven and the paint applies unevenly.

In addition to the preparation, I recommend using a good primer that is specifically designed to promote adhesion on melamine-coated furniture. Otherwise, the paint often just won’t stick.

Also, here’s a tip for applying the paint: use either a foam brush or a small roller that doesn’t leave brush marks. Lightly sand between coats (with grit 240 or finer) – this ensures a smooth finish. Patience is really important here!

If you prefer a matte finish, make sure the paint is formulated for that; otherwise, it may end up glossier than expected.

One more thing: always work in a well-ventilated area – it makes painting more comfortable and drying more effective.

Hey, the main points have already been well explained – there’s hardly a way to go wrong. Just to motivate you: painting Malm furniture isn’t rocket science, but it’s basically ‘love and care’ for the piece. A bit of time, attention, and the right primer coat, and it will turn out great! 🙂

One more little tip: if you’re not completely happy with the result at home, you can gently sand it again with fine-grit sandpaper and apply another thin layer of varnish or paint. It’s like a beauty treatment for the furniture.

And if you’re feeling adventurous, try classic or trendy pastel shades – the contrast to the previously simple look can be really cool.

Oh, and don’t forget to tape the edges with painter’s tape. Especially with Malm, paint tends to run down the edges... 😉 Good luck!

Also, pay attention to temperature conditions – not too cold, not too humid. Otherwise, the paint won’t dry evenly.

And if you apply the paint in several thin layers, the result will be much better and more durable.
