ᐅ How can I use IKEA Besta units effectively as a shoe storage solution?

NEDELJKOHello everyone,
I am currently considering how to use the IKEA Besta system as a shoe rack in a particularly practical way. My focus is not only on storage but also on easy accessibility and organization, especially with many different types of shoes like sneakers, boots, and children’s shoes.
Does anyone have experience with the best way to arrange the interior? For example, using shelves, boxes, or special systems to save space?
I’m also very interested in questions about stability for heavier shoes like winter boots, as well as neat storage for frequently used shoes.
I would really appreciate tips that go beyond simply “placing shoes normally” – maybe even tricks for labeling or quick access. Thanks in advance!

I am currently thinking about how to use the IKEA Besta system as a shoe rack in a particularly practical way. That’s a great idea! 😊 I’ve been using my Besta exactly like that for a few months now and I’m very happy with it. My tip: use drawer inserts or smaller boxes so the shoes don’t just lie around loose – this way you keep everything organized and avoid clutter!
Also, I adjusted some of the shelves inside so boots can stand comfortably. For sneakers, I chose shallow storage containers that you can stack.
And very important: make it colorful! Label the boxes or use colored inserts. This makes searching much easier and also looks nice!
Don’t be afraid to build the system flexibly, you’ll be impressed! 😄

Does anyone have experience with the best way to organize the interior layout? For example, using shelves, boxes, or special systems to save space?I’d like to contribute by sharing my experience from a technical perspective. Essentially, the Besta system offers great flexibility thanks to adjustable shelves, which should be used optimally to efficiently organize different types of shoes.
My approach:
- First, I recommend adjusting the shelf heights so that flat shoes and sneakers fit no more than two rows per shelf. This prevents stacking that makes it difficult to take shoes out.
- For boots, I use taller compartments, sometimes without extra shelves, to avoid bending or creasing.
- To ensure stability for heavier winter boots, the bottom shelf should be reinforced with an additional support profile or a sturdy insert, as the standard material may sag under heavy weight.
- For storing small shoe accessories like waterproof sprays or shoe stretchers, I use shallow boxes placed in the lower compartments.
Could you tell me roughly how many pairs of shoes you want to store and whether you intend to use the unit as an open shelf or with doors? That would help me tailor the recommendation more precisely.

Make it colorful! Label the boxes or use colored inserts.I find this tip charming, but I am a bit more critical. From a purely functional perspective, too much color can sometimes reduce clarity in a system that is mainly meant to create order—especially if the color scheme is uncoordinated.
To me, a much more important question is how the Besta is used in terms of ventilation when storing shoes. Closed, unventilated compartments can encourage odor buildup, which is often underestimated. Does anyone have experience with open fronts or grille solutions combined with Besta?
Also, the load limits of the shelving should not be overlooked. Proper reinforcement is especially necessary for very heavy shell boots.
How do you approach the combination of function and design—do you prefer a minimalist solution, or are modular additions with other LEGO-like systems an option?
