Hello everyone, I have a specific question about the Ikea Pax system: Is there a way to add soft-closing mechanisms to the existing Pax drawers? My Pax drawers unfortunately close quite loudly and firmly, and I have seen soft-close mechanisms retrofitted in other furniture. However, so far I have not found any products that are specifically designed for Ikea Pax drawers. Can anyone tell me if there are actually suitable dampers or similar retrofit kits that can be easily integrated into the existing drawers? I would appreciate detailed information, ideally with notes on compatibility, installation, and possible limitations. Thanks in advance!

Hello Janis, your concern is completely understandable and is actually a common issue with Ikea Pax. In general, Ikea does not offer built-in soft-close or damping systems for the Pax drawers by default, unlike some other Ikea drawer series. However, there are ways to retrofit this feature, although with certain limitations and effort involved.

First of all: Pax drawers usually use metal runners with rollers or slides that do not have integrated damping. You can use retrofit soft-close adapters from third-party manufacturers, which are attached to the drawer slides. The following points are important here:

- Compatibility: The adapters must match the exact width and type of the Pax drawer slides. Most adapters are designed for standard full-extension slides or roller guides, which can vary with Pax.
- Installation: There is usually limited space or screw holes available. Sometimes it is necessary to slightly modify the runners or the drawer fronts.
- Functionality: Retrofits can improve the smoothness of operation but often do not achieve the same quality as an original integrated damper.

I have personally installed so-called soft-close adapters from third-party suppliers on a Pax chest of drawers. First, I measured the exact dimensions of the slides and then ordered the suitable adapters. It is important to have a fully functional slide, as some adapters only work well with intact roller mechanisms.

If you like, I can provide you with specific model examples and sources. It would also be helpful to know your drawer size and slide type so I can assist you more precisely.

Exactly, there are third-party soft-close adapters that can be mounted on the Pax drawers. It’s best to carefully check the rails beforehand to determine which model you have. There is no complete soft-close replacement directly from Ikea.

Regarding retrofitting soft-close dampers for Ikea Pax drawers, it can be clearly stated that Ikea itself does not offer compatible soft-close drawer slides for Pax. The existing roller or metal rail slides are not designed for retrofitting with original damping systems.

Alternatively, there are various aftermarket soft-close adapters available, but the following conditions should be considered:

- Type of slide system (roller guide vs. ball-bearing drawer slides)
- Installation dimensions (length, width, screw positions)
- Load capacity and drawer weight

Most retrofit kits are designed to be universal, but they don’t fit perfectly and require some DIY skills during installation. Another option is to replace the drawer slides entirely with new soft-close models, which usually is neither easy nor inexpensive.

Conclusion: There is currently no simple plug-and-play solution, but with research and adjustments, retrofitting is possible.

That’s a good point and, in my experience, often the most reliable solution if you value smooth and quiet closing. A retrofit kit often only provides limited damping because it doesn’t replace the entire drawer mechanism.

I personally replaced the bottom roller guides on a Pax drawer system with high-quality full-extension slides that have integrated soft-close. This required some adjustments to the cabinet, such as enlarging drill holes and repositioning screws, but the result was significantly better.

If the cabinet frame is in good condition and you have decent DIY skills, the effort can be worthwhile. However, you should make sure that the new slides can support enough weight and fit the drawer dimensions. The width and depth of the drawer should be measured precisely beforehand; otherwise, the new slides won’t fit properly.

One more tip: the original Ikea Pax internal dimensions can differ slightly from third-party slide measurements. This can cause issues if you don’t measure carefully or use generic products.

I’m happy to write a guide or share tips on suitable slides if there is interest.
