ᐅ Kallax Side Panel Torn After Moving Furniture – Is Repair Possible?

Hello everyone,

Yesterday, while moving furniture in my apartment, I unfortunately damaged a side panel of my IKEA Kallax shelf unit – it has a crack. It is the outer side wall, which is a relatively thin MDF panel with a veneer finish. The crack runs almost the entire height, but it hasn’t completely broken through; it's more like the material has split.

My question to the community here:

Are there practical repair methods to restore a cracked side panel like this so that it is stable again and the repair is reasonably inconspicuous?

I have considered whether wood glue and clamps would help, or if some sort of filler compound combined with sanding and possibly repainting would be effective.

Has anyone had experience repairing Kallax panels like this? I would also appreciate tips on suitable materials (e.g., specific adhesives or coatings) that work well for this thin material and are not applied too thickly.

Thanks in advance!

I understand your frustration; a crack like that can be really annoying. 🙂

If you decide to go the repair route, I would suggest using wood glue combined with a good clamp or a set of clamps as a solid base. After that, a fine sanding and a bit of paint could help make it less noticeable.

If you ever want to move the shelf to a different wall, be sure to carefully set the board aside. Replacements aren’t a big deal either, as IKEA ships quickly.

Honestly – it doesn’t always have to be perfect; sometimes it’s enough if it stays stable and looks reasonably good. 🙂

Good luck!

I hope you can still enjoy using the shelf for a long time. Sometimes it helps me to know that others go through similar little disasters.

Ask yourself: How important is appearance compared to function? Sometimes a colored or patterned cover can be a good workaround, masking the crack while also adding support. Maybe a laminate film?

Maybe you or others have some creative ideas—the community will surely be behind you.

Hello,

I just wanted to offer some encouragement: you can definitely save a Kallax with the right gluing technique.

What I did in a similar situation was to reinforce the cracked area from the inside with thin wooden strips after gluing. These strips help distribute the load more evenly.

I completely agree. The most important thing is that the shelf doesn’t collapse. You can always improve the appearance later.

Replace the board: reorder from IKEA.

Repair: apply glue, clamp firmly, let dry.

Done.

When the shelf is fully loaded, I recommend a replacement. Glue can help, but it does not support the full weight as securely.

If you still want to do it: press the glue into the crack, use clamps, let it dry completely, then even out with a putty knife.

I would like to add something if you are going to repair the board:

Get high-quality clamps, preferably several, to distribute the pressure evenly across the crack. Excessive or uneven pressure can cause further damage to the MDF.

For gluing, I would recommend a PU adhesive, as it is waterproof and flexible, which can be helpful when moving furniture later.

If you want additional stability after the repair, small battens fixed with screws to the back of the side panel could provide extra reinforcement.

Important: Pay attention to the production year and possible variations in board thickness when ordering. Some Kallax versions differ slightly.
