Hello everyone,
I have been having an issue for some time with the drawers of my Ikea Pax wardrobe, specifically with the so-called inner drawers. They often jam when being pulled out or pushed in, which makes handling very frustrating.
The drawers are properly installed, but as soon as they are heavily loaded or operated quickly, the movement is no longer smooth. I have already checked whether the runners or the side fittings are bent, but I couldn’t find any noticeable damage.
I’m interested in what the typical causes for this are and whether glued or warped components are a common source of problems. Are there any modifications or adjustment tips to improve the smoothness of operation?
Or do you actually need to get replacement parts once the jamming has started?
I’m grateful for any advice, as I find the Pax drawers really practical and don’t want to have to accept this issue.

Hello dokar,
Your issue with the misaligned Pax drawers is quite common. The most frequent causes are usually:
- Dirt or small foreign objects in the drawer slides that obstruct smooth movement.
- Uneven loading of the drawers, especially when heavy items cause tilting and jamming.
- Installation irregularities that might not be visible at first glance but can slightly bend the posts or change the angle of the guide rails.
I recommend first thoroughly cleaning and lubricating all the slides—ideally using a dry silicone spray that does not attract dirt. Then check whether the drawers are inserted perfectly parallel and not tilted sideways.
If the drawer slides are bent, most can be straightened easily. If that’s not possible, replacing the slides might help.
One additional tip: if you load the drawers with particularly heavy items, try distributing individual heavy objects across several drawers to reduce the load.
I hope these suggestions are helpful.

I recommend thoroughly cleaning and lubricating all rails first – especially using a dry silicone spray that does not attract dirt. This is a very important point. Additionally, the Ikea Pax drawer runners are made from thin sheet steel, which can easily bend slightly if improperly installed (e.g., screwed in misaligned), causing the drawer to jam.
My tip is to carefully remove the front panels and adjust the sliding path if the drawer is sitting crooked. Another key point is to check the back panel – imbalances there can easily lead to forces that promote jamming.
Finally, I suggest upgrading to high-quality drawer inserts or runners that improve sliding comfort. There are suitable alternative rails available that glide more smoothly and are more durable while having similar dimensions.

Good luck with your optimization.

An additional checkpoint is to inspect the back panel – any imbalance there can easily lead to forces that promote jamming. Thanks for the tip, I hadn’t considered that before. The back panel is quite thin, and I had actually secured it firmly, but it’s possible that external pressure has caused some slight deformation.
I will take a closer look at it today and, if necessary, make adjustments from the inside.
I’ve also been wondering: Could excessive load on individual drawers permanently warp or damage the sliding mechanism? Or can the Ikea drawer slides handle higher loads for short periods without issue?
I want to understand whether I need to be more careful in handling, or if the drawers are generally robust and can withstand such impacts more often.

Could it be that excessive load on individual drawers mechanically deforms or permanently damages the slide mechanisms?Basically, the slide rails of Ikea Pax drawers are designed for moderate loads but are not industrial-grade. The permissible load is usually about 15 kg per drawer (33 lbs), which is sufficient for clothing and typical household items.
If the drawer is overloaded or heavy objects are stored improperly, this can indeed lead to permanent deformation or jamming. Especially frequent opening and closing under heavy load causes increased wear and can damage the sliding hinges.
My recommendations:
- Distribute heavy loads across several drawers.
- Make sure that no part of the drawer slide is pinched or blocked.
- Regularly check the function and readjust if necessary.
If operational problems still occur frequently, replacing the slide rails may be advisable. Spare parts are available from Ikea and are relatively inexpensive.
This way, you can significantly extend the service life of your Pax drawers.

Distribute heavy loads across several drawers instead.Great tip! I can only confirm that; otherwise, the small drawers eventually sit crooked in the tracks, and that causes a lot of trouble. 😅
A bit of grease or, even better, a dry silicone spray really works wonders – I used it on my Pax drawers as well. Suddenly, the drawers glide like butter again – basically a "wellness treatment" for your furniture.
And honestly: who wants to experience a stall when opening a drawer? It's like a little traffic jam in the cabinet! 🚦
If none of this helps, maybe upgrading to metal rollers or high-quality drawer slides, as already mentioned, will do the trick.
Small investment, big comfort gain, in my opinion.
Good luck with deburring and have fun decluttering with smoothly running drawers!
