Hello everyone,

I have installed several IKEA Metod tall cabinets in my kitchen, but I’ve noticed that the interior lighting is quite dim and uneven during use. This makes it difficult to quickly find items, especially in the deeper shelves or when multiple levels are filled.

So my question is: How can I improve the lighting inside IKEA Metod tall cabinets for better visibility?

I’m mainly interested in practical, easy-to-implement solutions that enhance illumination while remaining as discreet as possible. Which lighting systems do you recommend? Are there any special installation tips or specific types of lights that have proven effective? Equally important: How do you handle power supply and switch operation in these tall cabinets?

I look forward to your experiences, recommendations, or any advice on potential challenges.

Thanks and best regards!

Hello reo36,

First of all, thank you very much for your detailed question – it makes it easier to provide targeted advice.

For optimizing the lighting inside IKEA Metod tall cabinets, I recommend the following structured approach:

- Choose the type of lighting: LED strips or individual LED spotlights are usually ideal, as they generate little heat and can be easily placed in narrow spaces.

- Positioning: The lights should be installed at the top inside the cabinet, preferably angled slightly towards the shelves to minimize shadows caused by the shelf boards.

- Power supply: If a fixed installation with mains connection is not possible, many use battery-operated LED lights with motion sensors or touch switches. These greatly simplify operation.

- Operation: Reliable switches on the cabinet or motion sensors prevent missing the switch button when the doors are closed.

- Cable management: Ensure unobtrusive cable routing, for example along the cabinet sides or back panels.

Avoid some common mistakes:
- Do not stick LED strips directly onto shelves where they are hidden
- Do not plan with no power source and then mix different systems

Summary:
LED strips or individual spotlights mounted at the top inside the cabinet, combined with motion sensors or touch switches, usually deliver good results. Make sure to route cables neatly and identify your power source (fixed wiring or battery) in advance.

I hope this helps! If you like, I can provide more details on installation or recommend products.

In my opinion, the topic of lighting in IKEA Metod tall cabinets is often greatly overrated.

This is true, but I wonder if it is more of a cosmetic feature. If you have good kitchen organization, you don’t need fancy lighting – what you need are truly accessible items. If you want to always keep your pots and pans well in sight, it’s better to invest in proper storage rather than expensive LEDs.

I have no objection to a simple, energy-efficient LED strip at the top; that makes sense. However, battery-powered solutions with motion sensors strike me as just below “toys” – they are often unreliable and quickly become annoying.

Basically, any “lighting optimization” is only as good as your personal standards and how often you use it. Maybe try it out first before completely retrofitting the cabinet and thinking you’ve found the holy grail.

Installation of battery-powered LED strips with motion sensors at the top inside the cabinet.

Power supply is simply provided by these batteries.

Mounted with adhesive tape, no wiring required.

Good morning,

I’d like to add some practical tips from my experience to the previous posts:

- For lighting inside IKEA Metod tall cabinets, a combination of LED strips and sensor switches works very well. Sensors that react to door openings are especially useful, as they automatically turn the lights on and off.

- Make sure to choose warm white light color (around 2700–3000 Kelvin) to create a pleasant and not too harsh interior illumination.

- When routing cables, plan to run them along the side walls or behind the shelves so they don’t get in the way.

- You can also use flexible LED strips that can be easily connected with a plug connector if you want to light several levels.

- Cabinets with glass doors sometimes allow lighting to be integrated from the outside for indirect illumination.

- If you want a socket solution, it’s smart to plan the electrical wiring during the assembly of the Metod cabinets to avoid retrofitting later.

- Pay attention to the IP rating of the fixtures if moisture or kitchen fumes might be an issue.

If anyone has detailed questions about the implementation, I’m happy to help.

It is worth taking a closer look at which types of lighting actually provide added value. Most LED strips have good efficiency, but often they are not the ideal shape for deep tall cabinets.

In my opinion, the best optimization is to mount the light source in a way that prevents shadows caused by shelves. This usually means multiple light sources at different levels, connected through well-planned wiring routes. Without proper power supply and wiring, even the best lighting system won’t be effective.

Therefore, planning the power supply is crucial; only after that should the choice of fixtures follow. Also consider usability: motion sensors should respond quickly and accurately, or you can use a switch with a comfortable tactile feel, installed in a convenient location.

Don’t underestimate the impact of light color on the eyes. Cool white light can make the items in the cabinets look unnatural and spoil the atmosphere.

My recommendation: several small LED spots instead of one long LED strip, with a fixed wired mains connection, carefully planned switches, and a warm white light color.
