Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to install an Ikea PAX wardrobe system and am looking into the topic of security. Specifically, I am interested in whether there are special safety locks available for the PAX doors from Ikea. I want to prevent small children or unauthorized persons from gaining access to the contents of the wardrobe on their own.

Does anyone know of PAX doors that come standard with special locking mechanisms or that can be upgraded with additional parts for this purpose?

I am not just looking for standard lock mechanisms but mainly for solutions that maintain the typical Ikea wall cabinet style while still providing reliable protection against accidental opening or unauthorized access.

I look forward to any experiences, tips, or known alternatives you can recommend. Thanks in advance!

Hello,

by default, Ikea does not offer PAX doors with integrated safety locks. The doors usually come with magnetic catches or standard handles.

For extra security, you can retrofit child safety locks or external locks. For example, there are magnetic locks that can be installed on the inside and remain invisible.

Hello Gopomi,

I would like to address your original question in more detail, as the topic of safety for PAX wardrobe doors is quite complex.

IKEA itself does not offer PAX doors with built-in safety locks—meaning no locking mechanisms that can be secured or feature advanced safety functions. The PAX doors are primarily designed as flexible modular wardrobes, focusing on easy replacement and customization.

However, this does not mean that safety features cannot be implemented. The following options are available:

- Magnetic locks: These are popular as child safety devices. They are installed on the inside and block the door from opening but can be released with a special magnetic key. The advantage is that they are not visible from the outside.

- Surface-mounted locks: External locks can be attached to the outside of the door. However, these alter the clean design of the PAX doors somewhat.

- Installation of third-party locks: Some DIYers install small box locks into the doors but need to modify the doors for this.

- Alternative locking systems with digital locks are not offered as a standard by IKEA but can be installed as a DIY project.

It is also important to note that many PAX doors can be easily removed from their hinges, which slightly reduces safety for young children, making additional locking devices advisable.

I am interested in knowing which specific door or wardrobe model you have in mind and whether you are primarily concerned with child safety or theft protection. This information would help provide more specific recommendations.

I completely agree. I have several PAX wardrobes myself and use common child safety locks attached on the inside to protect against curious children. This usually works quite well.

As valerie-tr mentioned, there are no standardized solutions directly from Ikea for this. However, you might experiment with something like bike locks or small padlocks if regular child safety locks are not enough for you. Unfortunately, there are no Ikea-compatible locking systems that you can simply screw in.

I also recommend paying attention to how the doors are hung during installation—sometimes the hinges can be adjusted to make the doors harder to open, which provides a small extra layer of protection.

If you provide more details about your specific situation, we might be able to offer more targeted advice.
