ᐅ Why isn’t the hinge working properly on my IKEA Metod cabinet?

MomaryanHello everyone, I hope there is someone here with experience with IKEA Metod cabinets and their hinges. With my cabinet, the hinge is unfortunately not working properly: the door doesn’t close fully, sometimes it sticks or slightly protrudes at the side. I have already adjusted the hinge several times, tried tightening the screws, and adjusted the mounting plates. Still, a perfect closure is not possible. What stands out is that the hinge slightly tilts when opening or closing and therefore doesn’t fully return to its intended position.
My question is: what could cause these issues on this model, and are there proven methods or tips to solve the problem permanently? I have already checked whether the door itself is hanging straight and whether all parts are properly installed. I would appreciate any advice regarding possible installation errors, worn parts, or adjustment options.

- First, check if the hinge is fully and correctly snapped into place. These hinges are clip-mounted, meaning they operate within a clip-on system—if the hinge is not properly seated, it can cause binding.
- The adjustment options are threefold: depth, height, and lateral offset. The lateral adjustment is probably most relevant in your case since the door is sticking out. Use the lateral adjustment screw carefully.
- A common mistake is that the hinge plate does not sit on a flat surface—for example, an unevenly screwed-in screw can cause the hinge to tilt slightly.
- Also check if the hinges have enough play to allow proper door alignment. Sometimes overtightened screws or debris can interfere.
- If the hinge makes creaking or stiff noises when opening, this may indicate a dirty or damaged ball bearing.
- An additional tip: verify that the cabinet corners and side panels are truly square and stable. Even slight deformations often distort the hinge alignment.
Can you provide more details about the hinge models used? Are they the standard or soft-close versions? And have you tightened all screws to the appropriate torque? If you want, I’m happy to guide you step by step again.

Hey Momaryan, that sounds really annoying when the hinge is creaking and sticking like that 😅. I've also had the problem with my Metod cabinets where the doors behaved differently than expected.
The most important thing is to get the small screws right. Sometimes it takes two or three tries to get the door perfectly aligned. And don’t tighten them too much, or the door can warp quickly!
Personally, I always bring a bit of patience and use the smallest screwdriver possible – it sometimes feels more like precise handcraft than furniture assembly 😉.
Also try moving the door slightly while adjusting. It helps to find the right balance so nothing sticks or gaps. Good luck, you’ll manage it!

Momaryan, it is important to systematically narrow down the cause. In summary, I recommend the following checks and actions:
- Check if the hinges are properly and fully engaged
- Verify that all screws are secure but not overtightened
- Ensure the hinges show no visible damage or deformation
- Check the squareness of the cabinet carcass and doors using a square to rule out warping
- Adjust the hinges in the following order: height, lateral offset, depth
If in doubt, it is advisable to replace the hinge, as mechanical wear or manufacturing defects can also be causes. Hinges should be opened and closed evenly during use to prevent misalignment.
If you are using the soft-close function, check the dampers for proper operation. If the door does not close despite correct adjustment, the hinge mechanism may be faulty.

JEREMIAH3820 May 2021 11:46Hello Momaryan, I completely understand how frustrating these kinds of problems can be. I once had a similar issue with a Metod cabinet, and constantly readjusting it nearly drove me crazy.
The important thing is not to get discouraged. My personal trick was to completely loosen the hinges, remove the door, and check the hinge and the panel separately. I then noticed that a mounting screw had slightly loosened without me realizing it.
This order was helpful for me as well.
Make sure to take short breaks while adjusting. Sometimes a fresh perspective helps. If you notice that the material isn't holding properly somewhere, check whether there might be a small assembly error or if a screw is too large for the hole.
You can do this, and if you have any more questions, I’m happy to help!
