Hello everyone,

I recently noticed some unpleasant marks on the surface of my IKEA Hemnes cabinet – mainly small scratches and dents on the white painted wood. Since this type of furniture usually has a painted or waxed finish, the repair is not straightforward.

My question is: How can damage on IKEA Hemnes surfaces be professionally repaired so the result is as invisible as possible, or at least barely noticeable?

I am particularly interested in methods that can be done using common household products or special repair kits. Tips on necessary preparation steps, such as cleaning or sanding, would also be helpful. If anyone has experience with refinishing Hemnes fronts, I would greatly appreciate detailed advice. Thank you in advance!

For small scratches, use a color-matched furniture wax or repair marker. Clean the surface beforehand. If the damage is larger, lightly sand the area and then touch up with acrylic paint or varnish.

I can only emphasize this! I personally repaired my Hemnes dresser with a color-matched wax, and it worked really well. Just give it a try – it’s truly satisfying to fix those small damages yourself! 😊

Also, if you’re unsure, make sure the surface is really clean and dust-free before starting any repairs. Otherwise, the result won’t look as good. Good luck to everyone giving it a go!

The Hemnes series mostly uses painted pine wood surfaces, which are sensitive to the pores and texture of the wood. For repairs, please note:

- First, clean the damaged area to remove grease and dirt.
- Small scratches can be filled with a color-matched furniture wax or wax stick.
- Larger dents should be gently smoothed with fine sandpaper (grit 320-400). Be careful not to sand too much to avoid damaging the paint layer excessively.
- Afterwards, touch up the area with suitable paint or acrylic. It is recommended to match the color tone precisely; IKEA product names and color codes can be helpful if you need to reorder.
- For smooth surfaces, lightly polish the repair area after it dries.

Additionally, it is important to carry out repairs under ideal conditions (e.g. dry, dust-free air). If you prefer household materials, furniture wax and acrylic repair sticks from specialist suppliers for wood repairs are recommended.

That sums it up quite well! But I would add: You need patience to apply the wax carefully and, if necessary, make several touch-ups. A fine, somewhat stiff brush can also help to apply acrylic paint precisely.

What I often do after the repair is a very light sanding with 600-grit wet sandpaper to smooth the edges. But be careful: Always go gently, otherwise it might look worse afterward! 😉

Overall, the rule is: It’s better to fix small areas gradually rather than sanding or repainting large surfaces. This way, the furniture keeps its original character while still looking great.
