Hello everyone,

I am looking for a slim or extra narrow insert solution for the Kallax shelving unit to specifically store keys. Does anyone have experience with or know of suitable inserts that don’t fill the entire compartment but only a small part of it, allowing the keys to be organized? It is important that these inserts are sturdy, preferably lockable or at least designed so that the keys don’t lie loose.

I would appreciate any tips on original ideas or alternative solutions, including details on dimensions or sources. Thanks in advance!

As far as I know, there are no specially extra narrow inserts for keys in the Kallax. However, you can place narrow boxes or small organizers in one of the compartments, which works well.

Exactly, I’m also not aware of any ready-made inserts specifically designed for key storage in the Kallax. If you want a custom solution, I would recommend adapting or building one yourself. For example, you could create narrow wooden inserts from plywood with compartments that fit exactly into a Kallax cubicle (standard width approx. 33cm (13 inches), height approx. 33cm (13 inches), depth approx. 39cm (15 inches)).

It is important to take precise measurements of your cubicle and the keys to incorporate suitable trays or hooks. The materials should be sturdy enough—possibly metal hooks combined with wooden slats—to hang keys securely. If security is a concern, you could also add a small locking mechanism with a mini lock.

Another option is narrow plastic or metal boxes that you can cut to size. Some DIYers have built small drawer inserts with slim compartments on top, allowing you to lay keys without them mixing up. It helps to consider the volume of the keys beforehand and whether multiple people should have access.

Could you provide more details about your keys? Approximately how many keys should fit in one cubicle? And is your focus more on organization or security?

Hey, I really like the idea of narrow inserts for keys in the Kallax! 😊 I’ve repurposed a few slim boxes from IKEA myself (not from Kallax, but from the same brand) – everything looks much neater inside than having loose keys scattered around. You can solve the locking issue by attaching small padlocks to the back of the boxes.

Alternatively, magnetic key boards are also super practical; you can stick them inside a Kallax side if you don’t want to use a whole compartment. 😉 That way it’s not only slim but also stylish!

I would be cautious with that.

The idea may sound practical, but it’s not fully thought through when it comes to keys: padlocks on a box that actually contains the key itself don’t provide any real security. It’s more symbolic and can even be counterproductive if you rely on this kind of “protection.”

Instead, I would recommend using a separate, lockable key board or key safe for keys that require security. So far, I haven’t found any specialized product that fits into Kallax shelves.

If it’s more about organization than security, modular small containers with multiple compartments could be a solution. Have you checked whether such organizers from office supplies can be adapted to the required dimensions?
