Hello everyone,

I’m currently looking into which screws are the most durable for Ikea Platsa. Since the system is based on modular components and is often reconfigured, it’s important to find a screw type that provides a secure hold without compromising the furniture’s load-bearing capacity.

I’m particularly interested in whether standard chipboard screws are sufficient or if it’s better to use special furniture or connector screws. The material (steel, galvanized, stainless steel), as well as the correct size and coating, are also important to me because I plan to use the furniture in a slightly more humid room.

Does anyone have experience or recommendations on which screws hold best and are strongest for PLATSA? It would be great if you could also briefly explain why the chosen screw is better than Ikea’s standard option. Thanks in advance!

I would recommend using galvanized chipboard screws for PLATSA. The standard Ikea screws are generally okay but often not very durable. Galvanized chipboard screws provide better protection against rust and usually hold much more firmly, especially when tightened deeply enough.

I understand that you’re focusing on stability, especially with PLATSA, as working with modular furniture can sometimes be tricky. I was also concerned that the Ikea screws might not be strong enough, particularly with several modifications. For me, switching to stainless steel screws helped, even though it was a bit more expensive. It just gave me more confidence, especially since my apartment is somewhat humid. But of course, that’s a matter of personal preference. How about you—do you frequently make changes to the furniture setup?

To increase the stability of PLATSA furniture, choosing the right screws is indeed important. Ikea often uses so-called connector screws (Minifix system) for PLATSA, which are optimized for that system. However, if you want to replace or supplement the screws, I recommend the following criteria:

- Screw type: Coarse-thread chipboard screws are better suited for wood-based materials as they grip well in the material.
- Material quality: Stainless steel screws are corrosion-resistant and therefore especially suitable for damp rooms.
- Diameter and length: At least 4 mm (0.16 inches) in diameter to ensure sufficient stability. The length should be chosen so that the screw penetrates at least two-thirds of the panel thickness.

Important: Replacing identical screws from the Ikea PLATSA system requires caution because the original assembly system is specifically designed for the included screws. A combination of original parts and high-quality supplementary screws is advisable here.

In summary: For stability, damp rooms, and remodeling options, stainless steel chipboard screws (4x50 mm (0.16x2 inches) or 4x60 mm (0.16x2.4 inches)) are the best choice.

Thanks for asking! Yes, I occasionally rearrange my PLATSA units, sometimes moving smaller shelves around, other times adjusting larger combinations like cabinets and dressers. That’s why I prefer not to use screws that weaken after repeated tightening and loosening or damage the wood.

That’s good to know; the original screws often feel quite thin.

Also: does anyone here use screws with special coatings that protect the engineered wood and at the same time prevent rust? Or do you mostly go for simple galvanized or stainless steel screws?

Here is a brief overview of how to choose the most suitable screws for PLATSA to ensure maximum stability:

- Material: Stainless steel is recommended for damp areas. This prevents rust, which supports long-term stability.
- Type: Chipboard screws with coarse threads, ideally 4x50 to 4x60 mm (approximately 4x2 to 4x2.4 inches).
- Coating: Zinc-plated screws are sufficient for dry indoor areas; however, stainless steel is better for kitchens and bathrooms where moisture is present.
- Installation: Screws should be pre-drilled carefully to protect the wood and prevent splitting.
- Reuse: For frequent disassembly, use screws with durable threads, e.g., wood screws with special threads that improve grip after multiple uses.

A common mistake is using screws that are too short or too thin, which do not grip deeply enough and compromise stability. To avoid this, it is better to use screws with a 5 mm (0.2 inch) diameter and adequate length, provided the cabinet has enough space.

In summary: For the best stability with PLATSA, use stainless steel chipboard screws with coarse threads, 50-60 mm (2-2.4 inches) long, and pre-drill if necessary.
