ᐅ Which screws provide the best stability for Ikea PLATSA units?

Hello everyone,
I’m currently looking into which screws are the most durable for Ikea Platsa. Since the system is based on modular components and is often reconfigured, it’s important to find a screw type that provides a secure hold without compromising the furniture’s load-bearing capacity.
I’m particularly interested in whether standard chipboard screws are sufficient or if it’s better to use special furniture or connector screws. The material (steel, galvanized, stainless steel), as well as the correct size and coating, are also important to me because I plan to use the furniture in a slightly more humid room.
Does anyone have experience or recommendations on which screws hold best and are strongest for PLATSA? It would be great if you could also briefly explain why the chosen screw is better than Ikea’s standard option. Thanks in advance!

Does anyone here use screws with special coatings that protect the engineered wood and also prevent rust?So far, I have mainly used screws with a yellow zinc coating, as they provide corrosion protection without adding much extra cost.
However, I feel that stainless steel, although somewhat more expensive, appears more durable and stable for everyday use. Especially when you have children and frequent renovations, where the screws are subjected to a lot more stress, this seems to be the best solution for me.
Additionally, using the correct speed and torque when driving screws is important to prevent them from loosening or causing the wood to expand.
Hello everyone!
I really like that you’re having such an in-depth screws discussion for Platsa here. 🙂 By the way, I have a little trick when buying screws: I usually choose zinc-plated steel with a Phillips head because it grips well and makes screwing easier.
Absolutely, I’ve experienced that too! Too-short screws are definitely one of the most common pitfalls.
Considering that PLATSA is made of wood-based panels, screwing it in like “tightening it down” is rather suboptimal. It’s better to tighten firmly but not over-tighten; that way, the connection holds better and the wood isn’t weakened.
And yes, for damp rooms, stainless steel is truly the best choice since it doesn’t corrode.
In the end, the combination of
- material quality
- screw size
- and proper installation
is crucial to ensure that PLATSA remains stable over time.
Good luck with your screwing!

A common mistake: Using screws that are too short or too thin, so they don’t hold deeply enough, which makes everything unstable.
