ᐅ Illuminating a Single-Family Home from Below / How to Implement?

Hello everyone,
We are currently building our single-family home and have deliberately decided not to install recessed lights in the roof overhang. Instead, we want to illuminate the building from below.
However, we are quite uncertain about the following points:
- Number of lights
- Placement of the lights
- Beam angle
- Which types of lights are recommended? The garage door should also be illuminated, so the lights would need to be trafficable, etc.
In short, this is all new territory for us, and I would appreciate any ideas or suggestions you might have.
You can find an exterior view of our single-family home attached.
Thank you very much 🙂
Good luck

Motion detectors are definitely useful. However, keep your neighbors and nocturnal wildlife in mind. Outdoor lighting should only be on when necessary.
Even a motion detector that activates only when presence is detected can cause light pollution if the light source is too strong. My advice is to carefully consider where you need lighting and choose the fixtures accordingly.

Perhaps there is someone with experience in this area or who can recommend specific ground-level spotlights?

I don’t have a tip for recessed floor lights because we excluded them for exactly the reasons you mentioned. In my view, light that shines upward cannot be subtle. It might be acceptable for a neighbor, but not environmentally, directing light upward. That is basically the nature of a floor light.

Maybe someone has experience with this or can recommend specific ground-level spotlights? Subtly lighting the house would be an effect you keep on continuously in the dark; otherwise, you would be lighting the path, not the house.
So, to ask again: how long is it supposed to be on? Just 1-2 minutes when you come home, or effect lighting for a few hours in the evening?
The first option is fine—we have “up-down spotlights” that create a certain effect.
But lighting up the house simply because it looks nice, when nobody is outside passing by, is light pollution… which means you disturb especially animals in the dark.

So, once again, the question: how long do you want it on? Just 1-2 minutes when you come home, or mood lighting for a few hours in the evening?
The first option is fine, we have “up and down” spotlights that also create a certain effect. But lighting the house just because it looks nice, when no one is outside walking by—that is light pollution. This mainly means it greatly disturbs animals at night.Mainly during that time period or when someone enters the driveway. The control would be adjusted so that only the light in the driveway area turns on. The garden at the back stays dark.
So, no continuous mood lighting.
I did some research and found myself drawn to this image visually.
Not too wide, not too high a beam angle. I don’t want to light the entire 8m (26 feet) facade.
PS: Am I allowed to post this image here?
