Hello everyone,

We are currently building our single-family home and have deliberately decided not to install recessed lights in the roof overhang. Instead, we want to illuminate the building from below.

However, we are quite uncertain about the following points:

- Number of lights
- Placement of the lights
- Beam angle
- Which types of lights are recommended? The garage door should also be illuminated, so the lights would need to be trafficable, etc.

In short, this is all new territory for us, and I would appreciate any ideas or suggestions you might have.

You can find an exterior view of our single-family home attached.

Thank you very much 🙂

Good luck

Oh God, please don’t do this… Have you ever heard of light pollution?

How often do you expect it to be on, and how many lights are you planning to install? Your house is not a historic landmark… Do you have neighbors? They will definitely appreciate that...

I would never install this permanent effect lighting. Place light where you need it, but no more.

It’s not meant to stay on permanently. Most of the time it’s controlled by motion sensors.

I’m actually not familiar with light pollution yet. I’ll read up on it tomorrow.
If I shine the light downwards from the roof overhang, the difference shouldn’t be that big, right, or am I missing something?

Lighting from below is more complicated because you have to be very careful not to cause glare. Recessed floor lights often have issues with condensation, spike-mounted lights don’t stay securely in place… and it usually looks unnecessarily dramatic.
