ᐅ Take old/previous furniture to the new house or start completely fresh?

When I see photos of interior furnishings of houses here in the forum, I often get the impression, "Oh, everything looks so nice and new." Does anyone also bring old/previous furniture with them, or is almost everything replaced? My husband and I will be taking all our old/previous furniture with us. Is that still common nowadays, or is it considered strange in some way?

But none of this has to do with moving into a new house, since I haven’t completely changed myself during the planning phase.
I don’t buy a whole new outfit just because I need a new pair of pants.

… but there are also those who need the catalog furniture to go with the catalog house because they require the transformation into a different role.

So, what I would advise against is taking the kitchen with you and just adding to it. We did that, and financially it didn’t make sense compared to buying new.

You can’t really generalize like that. I hadn’t even had the kitchen for three years (like all the furniture) and I simply designed the floor plan to fit. After adding the dishwasher, only a new countertop was needed. That cost a total of €1000 (about $1100) and was certainly not comparable to buying a completely new kitchen.

Everything else was almost new and was moved along accordingly. Since now each child has their own room, of course one had to be furnished. Luckily, one daughter had a birthday just one week after the move... The other one keeps complaining that she ended up with the old furniture...

We didn’t buy anything new except for a few lamps. Everything was moved from the old apartment to the house, as we didn’t have any money for anything else and it wasn’t really necessary since everything was still in good condition. I would have liked a new kitchen, though, because the old one was second-hand and had been through several moves... but you know what? It’s still there and doing its job.

We haven’t done much decluttering either, since I usually declutter every 6-12 months anyway and not much accumulates in the first place. I can definitely recommend this approach and will continue doing it throughout the house. Even though we live in just 100 m² (1,076 sq ft), we still have plenty of free space in the cabinets and basement, and the garage and shed are not full either, even with all the garden equipment stored there.

It shows that the large amounts involved in buying a house have clouded my judgment. What’s a thousand and a half for a table when you’ve just spent ten thousand on the kitchen?
Absolutely agree, proportionality can easily get lost in the excitement.

3000€ for something pointless, of course!
“Pointless” is a very flexible term. Strictly speaking, almost everything we buy is pointless. More broadly, everything that truly brings us joy is “meaningful,” and even more broadly, we could convince ourselves that “meaningful” is anything that brightens our mood at the moment of purchase. That’s the mindset consumers use to justify their purchases. Heated and ventilated massage seats in the car with 8 programs for driver and front passenger – highly “meaningful”… just don’t get upset that the function isn’t available for the back seats as well…

We will take all the existing furniture with us, except for our sofa. It is completely worn out and would have been replaced by now if the move weren’t planned for the near future.
