ᐅ Centralized Control of Roller Shutters – Which Solution?

Hello everyone,

we are currently building our single-family house with a general contractor. Our quote includes electronic roller shutters and venetian blinds. The offer also includes one switch planned for each roller shutter or venetian blind. However, we are not entirely satisfied because there is no option to lower all the roller shutters and venetian blinds at once. Currently, I see the following solutions:

1) One central switch per floor (basement, ground floor, upper floor) that lowers all the roller shutters/venetian blinds on that level. According to the electrician, this is complicated to implement and quite expensive (about 1000 euros per switch plus wiring).

2) Each roller shutter/venetian blind is equipped with an actuator (is that the correct term?), which we can control wirelessly. In other words, everything operates with switches, but I have the option to send a wireless signal to all roller shutters so they go down or up together.

3) Electric wireless drives are used (e.g., Somfy Rs 100 io). Then no wired switches would be needed for the drives. However, I would have wireless switches stuck to the whole wall. Is that really practical?

I’m sure there are clever solutions I haven’t thought of… Can you help me?

What is the main issue here:
a) synchronous operation of the roller shutters and blinds (which I consider practically questionable as a desirable feature for shading);
b) centralized control in the sense of an “all-at-once” action, minimizing manual operation;
c) the idea similar to “central locking,” so that no roller shutter is “forgotten” when securing the property?

Actuators without sensors are “automatic, but dumb.” I would integrate a PLC into the control system—and for alternative manual operation, use push buttons instead of switches accordingly.

You can also take a look at the “Digitalstrom” system. It’s not the cheapest option, but it works very well for us.

Our Somfy switches are installed in standard frames. However, I’m not sure which model we have.
... and with corresponding sensors, everything works automatically.
We don’t have any wall switches for shutters or similar. Everything is automatic here, controlled by smartphone or wireless remote controls that are neatly organized.

Hello,

Originally, we didn’t want to deal with smart home technology in our new build. However, we wanted to be able to control all the roller shutters centrally. Our electrician advised against the conventional wiring to a main switch, since the total wiring cost would be equal to or higher than a Rademacher system he then recommended to us. This system integrates a radio transmitter in each roller shutter switch and installs a control unit in the utility room. We can then control all roller shutters using our smartphone. As complete beginners with smart home technology, this made sense to us. The cost was about 2200 € for the system, components, and installation (20 roller shutters). The system can also be upgraded with other smart home components if needed in the future, although we don’t currently see the need for that. Maybe this is helpful for you.

Best regards!

I’m joining in here because we’re also considering how to control roller shutters. What do you use to control them automatically? Based on brightness, motion in the room, or something else? We haven’t found a solution for ourselves yet and aren’t sure if we even want it or how to approach it. I’m not a fan of raising and lowering all the shutters together. For example, in the bathroom, it would be great if the shutter is already up early in the morning when I get up, but in the bedroom, I wouldn’t want to be woken up at 5 a.m. in summer by the noise of the shutters going up. Conversely, the bathroom shutter could go down at dusk, while in the living room you might still want to enjoy the starry sky. Somehow, I haven’t found the right idea for this yet.

Maybe I didn’t express myself clearly. Yes, there are not more switches, but these are switches that you stick on the wall (at least with Somfy), which then look different from the others, and I can already imagine the kids tearing the switches off.

The switches are screwed onto the wall. We have switches at the windows, a central control switch, and also smartphones for controlling. Somfy wind sensors are connected to the blinds. Everything works perfectly. The frames match Busch-Jaeger Futura Linear perfectly in our case.

Timer control is also possible.
