We are currently looking for a kitchen for our new build, which is scheduled to start in 2021. Nothing extravagant. Our first two visits to kitchen showrooms resulted in prices of at least 15,000 euros (around $16,000 USD), plus the side-by-side refrigerator that we plan to buy ourselves.
We are a bit surprised that for just a few pieces of furniture and three appliances (dishwasher, cooktop with fan, oven) we have to pay at least 15,000 euros. The consultants actually expected around 20,000 euros. The countertop is not even ceramic but rather granite.
Are there other options to purchase an affordable kitchen?
Please don’t get me wrong. We could afford such a kitchen. We just don’t see why we should spend 20,000 euros on a few furniture pieces and appliances.

I have an Ikea kitchen with 3 tall cabinets, totaling 5.20 m (17 feet). The appliances cost less than 8,000 euros. About 1,000 euros went into the solid wood countertop.
The induction cooktop and sink were bought used, only one oven. The layout plays a major role in whether it is a good kitchen.
Why don’t you show your planned kitchen? There will also be a bar at the entrance. Appliances:
- Induction cooktop including ventilation
- Dishwasher
- Oven
- Side-by-side refrigerator will be purchased separately.
To the left of the window there will be two tall cabinets. Otherwise, tall cabinets are on the right side.

At least 30-40% of the kitchen price goes toward distribution channels. Large showrooms, "free" non-binding planning services, and advertising all need to be covered. If you want to avoid this, you can plan the kitchen yourself or find a more affordable distribution channel, allowing you to save significantly without sacrificing much quality.
A common approach is to purchase and install the electrical appliances yourself. This way, we were able to afford mid-to-upper-class appliances without significant financial strain.

Bertram10025 Oct 2020 09:20Well, having the kitchen workstations always along the wall means that the cook or kitchen assistant works with their back to the room. This leaves a lot of space in the middle. If you also include a bar, you end up enclosing yourselves quite a bit. Although the kitchen is large enough and this wouldn’t be too much of a problem, with two or more people one person’s body blocks access to the cabinets. You have space for a raised built-in dishwasher, which I would definitely recommend including in your plans.
Consider whether you prefer to work facing into the room or towards the window/wall. This will determine the most suitable kitchen layout.

IKEA offers an induction cooktop with integrated downdraft for 1600 euros, AEG as well. Bosch has one for around 2000 euros (I think, but I’m not sure). You can also find options one price category below the “Bora Extra Expensive” models. A lot has changed recently with cooktops that have built-in ventilation.
