ᐅ Excessive Costs for the Kitchen?!

We are currently looking for a kitchen for our new build, which is scheduled to start in 2021. Nothing extravagant. Our first two visits to kitchen showrooms resulted in prices of at least 15,000 euros (around $16,000 USD), plus the side-by-side refrigerator that we plan to buy ourselves.

We are a bit surprised that for just a few pieces of furniture and three appliances (dishwasher, cooktop with fan, oven) we have to pay at least 15,000 euros. The consultants actually expected around 20,000 euros. The countertop is not even ceramic but rather granite.

Are there other options to purchase an affordable kitchen?

Please don’t get me wrong. We could afford such a kitchen. We just don’t see why we should spend 20,000 euros on a few furniture pieces and appliances.

Sounds like a non-negotiable price, significant customization effort, or not such a simple standard after all.

Wrong expectations.

The original poster could share their design so we can take a look. But when I hear "granite countertop," it seems they didn’t pick the most basic option. Then add full-extension drawers with soft-close mechanisms and a Le Mans corner cabinet here, and suddenly you’re looking at around $20,000.

We’ve always started with a clear budget with the kitchen suppliers, but the quotes consistently went 50–70% over. For example: we say $10,000 without appliances and end up at $17,000. Then, reminding them of the budget starts the usual negotiations, and you end up at $13,000 without appliances.

I think your question is great, partly because I couldn’t quite imagine the figures being discussed here in the forum regarding what kitchens cost nowadays. When it comes to the budgets of homeowners, if I remember correctly, estimates usually start around 30,000 to 40,000 (currency) for kitchens. (Similar figures apply to outdoor landscaping.) However, I now believe that kitchens, which are often connected with the living room and dining room, sometimes also include the "purchase prices" for the living and dining areas. I’m sorry I can’t explain it better. Then there are also some high-quality appliances.

We will stay well below that, as in our case the living room and dining room are not integrated with the kitchen, and vice versa, plus we only need a kitchen for two people.

I have an Ikea kitchen (3 tall cabinets, total length 5.20m (17 feet)) with appliances costing under 8000 euros. 1000 euros of that was spent on the solid wood countertop.
The induction cooktop and sink were bought used, only one oven. The layout is a key factor in whether it’s a good kitchen.
Why don’t you show your planned kitchen?

They are very pleasant neighbors. I have nothing negative to report.

Well, they are screwed in according to DIN standards, and your interior fittings with sliding mechanisms and soft-close, etc., also have their “cost” of installation.

Am I supposed to understand this? It sounds quite racist. I was born in Poland and hold both passports, German and Polish. I could also start by saying that my grandfather was German and was forced to fight for the Germans in the world war, etc...

I have absolutely no problem if Poles, Turks, Asians, aliens, or whoever else live next to me. Why should I? I judge a person not by their origin, but by their behavior...
