ᐅ Are electrical cables allowed to be installed under a shower?

Hello everyone,

we are currently building, and the electrician has installed a cable under our shower. The cable then runs up through the shower wall and through the exterior wall (outdoor light).

Now I’m wondering if this is actually allowed?
The electrician says it is.

So the cable lies on the base slab.
There will be screed and insulation on top of it, and plaster and tiles on the wall.
(The cable is chased into the masonry.)

Then take a photo of your situation.
In any case, there is an area in the shower where you stand to shower where no cable is allowed to be present. A defined hand zone is specified there.
Maybe that’s where the problem lies, and the other electrician’s statement is actually correct.

These long-haired people with dark clothes, dark hair, and fair skin seem eerie to me. But the idea behind it is nice.

Hi,
It complies with VDE standards. Cables installed flush in the wall can run alongside the shower at any time. It would not be compliant to have a tapping point within 60cm (24 inches) of Zone 0 (light or socket).
A brief quote from the regulation:

Cables and wiring systems may be installed within a remaining wall thickness of less than 6cm (2.4 inches) if
a: the circuits are SELV, PELV, separated earth, OR are protected by a 30mA RCD and include a protective conductor.

So, no problem at all. NYM cable includes a protective conductor, and an RCD is mandatory anyway.

I’m happy to do that, but it should be pretty straightforward, right?

The cable lies on the shower floor.

Then it goes toward the shower through the shower tray (basin) I would have, and then up to head height, then out into the garden.

So, less than 6cm (2.4 inches) is also acceptable in Zone 0?

I only come to about 3cm (1.2 inches) with plaster and tiles. At the bottom, clear, there will be screed etc., in total about 20cm (8 inches) with insulation.
