Hello!
After receiving a hefty quote for bathroom fixtures of around €22,200 (about €900 for a toilet bowl), I just got back from the ICU recovery room and am now dealing with toilet bowls.
The rimless wall-hung toilet from the company with the +, their own brand, seems to be from Laufen according to my research and has an average rating of 1/5 stars on Amazon. Reason: water splashes out at the front, and quality appears to be mediocre.
I went to the home improvement store (*ahem*) and saw:
- Standard wall-hung toilet €29
- Rimless wall-hung toilet €89
- Brand-name rimless toilet €300
When I asked, the saleswoman said, "Oh, it’s all the same, they all work equally well; you just pay more for the brand name with the branded manufacturers."
The super-premium rimless toilet from TOTO with Tornado Flush I found online for about €380.
In my apartment, there is a roughly 35-year-old toilet, now with many dull spots, but it still wonderfully houses the 'product.' I clean it every few weeks with some cleaner and a brush. So far, no complaints.
So, quite simply: Where on earth is the difference?
Thank you very much for your input!

@matte we have the Duravit DuraStyle wall-hung rimless toilet combo pack, with no visible mounting and no splashing. Price including the seat is 280 euros, which is a bargain.
In the granny flat, I installed a Villeroy & Boch product,
the Villeroy & Boch Omnia Architectura toilet seat, which even came with an isolation mat.
149 euros and it works well, but I have only tested it twice and didn’t notice any splashing.

People often underestimate how expensive the accessories can be. Hardware stores often sell low-quality items that barely meet the necessary standards. Bursting pipes and similar issues are no joke and can quickly cause major damage. You should keep in mind that the pipes and related components will be permanently under pressure, even during vacations or at night.
You can’t compare online prices to those of plumbing specialists. Online prices are often so low because, in theory, the products shouldn’t be installed by just anyone. The water supplier’s regulations, for example, usually require that work on water pipes must be carried out only by qualified professionals. Of course, this is not always followed, and normally everything works out fine. In the worst case, however, contamination due to improper installation could cause harmful substances to reach your neighbor during a pressure drop at the waterworks, potentially endangering their health after surgery or in a weakened condition. Afterwards, it would be difficult to prove that the water was the cause, and even more difficult to show that the fault lay with you. But then again, that’s a worst-case scenario. Although very unlikely, you’re probably more likely to win the lottery twice with all the right numbers.
Conclusion: buy the materials online if you want, but only get all the fittings and connection parts from authorized specialist suppliers—no hardware store junk. At least for the parts that will be under pressure...

You also can’t compare online prices to plumbing prices. Online prices are so low partly because, in theory, no one is allowed to install those parts. The water supplier’s regulations almost always require that work on water pipes be carried out only by professional companies. Of course, nobody strictly follows that and usually everything goes fine. In the worst case, contamination caused by improper installation during a pressure drop at the water treatment plant could reach a neighbor and kill them after a serious operation and weakened condition. Then you would have to prove it was due to the water and then that it was your fault. But then ^^
Many worst-case scenarios are possible. However, the odds of that happening are probably even less than winning the lottery twice with six correct numbers.
Conclusion: buy the parts online if you want, but get all the connection accessories only from professionals as original equipment — no hardware store cheap stuff. At least for the parts that will be under pressure...For me, this is the only valid reason not to rely on internet prices.
By the way, one should ask whether the entire economic “culture” will collapse if everyone only orders online: eventually, showrooms will disappear, online prices will have 100% markups due to returns... and then people will wonder why well-established towns no longer exist as they grow older.
Sure: when it comes to oneself — especially because of savings, etc. — one is indifferent, but it’s a fact that for things you want to admire and touch, those costs are also included.
I wouldn’t want to be in your children’s shoes!
In Lübeck, right next to IKEA, Villeroy & Boch operates a bathroom showroom over two floors in a modern shopping center. They are certainly not doing this to undercut IKEA’s prices, but because in a catchment area of three hundred thousand inhabitants, there are plenty of people who definitely won’t buy their bathroom from IKEA. Instead, they want to be pampered and feel they are getting something special, and so they are willing to spend several thousand euros (dollars) there, including installation service, which IKEA also offers—but there it’s informal and without a “gracious lady”...
