Hello everyone!
The paving work is coming up.
Besides the big problem of finding an affordable paver, I would like to ask for your opinions on gravel strips.
In the residential area, it’s about evenly split whether a gravel strip is installed around the house during paving or not.
It doesn’t seem to matter whether the houses have brick veneer or are rendered.
Some even skip the drainage membrane.
Could I please hear your opinions and experiences?

I understand that if you skip the gravel strip and, for example, place stones directly against the wall, it needs to be sealed additionally.

If paving is done directly against the facade, there is a risk that rainwater will not drain properly, which can cause damage to the base of the building due to frost and expansion.

There is really nothing more to add on this.

Best regards in brief

There isn’t much more to say about it.

Best regards

I didn’t know that.
Even if there is an eave overhang and a slope?
Why do so many people still pave right up to the house then?
I thought the gravel strip was supposed to reduce the “splash-back” of rain droplets hitting the ground and thus prevent the facade from getting dirty. Isn’t that correct?
And if you pave right up to the house, wouldn’t the dimpled membrane still provide a gap and “frost protection”? [emoji848]

Probably because they don’t know better?!

How wide should the strip be?
Is any type of gravel (regardless of color) particularly suitable for a gravel strip?
Or is any type rather unsuitable?
Do shape and size matter?
