We are building a new house and have decided to go with a prefabricated garage.
To make the garage floor more resistant to things like saltwater in winter, a coating was recommended. I would now like to apply this myself. What type of paint would be suitable for this? Can I use any standard 2-component epoxy resin coating? Are there any suppliers that come particularly recommended? I have also found coatings designed for industrial or workshop floors. Are there differences compared to coatings meant for garage floors?

Sackkarre4 Sep 2016 11:46Here are the first photos. One with the initial primer layer (from the previous day) and one right after the first coat of paint.
- What I seriously underestimated in terms of time: The colored component (A) had pigment settled at the bottom of the bucket. It took over half an hour of alternating stirring with a mixer and scraping with a wooden stick to get it mixed again. Perhaps the paint was not well pre-mixed by the manufacturer. But this should definitely be planned for or checked in advance. It was also good that I had two batteries for the cordless drill. That might be something to keep in mind as well.
- I found it easier not to spread the paint in zigzags but rather as individual puddles or spots. The dosage was simpler this way. I (tried to) spread the primer in zigzag patterns. That was quite uneven, and due to my lack of experience, the primer ran out towards the end. The spots can initially be spaced further apart and then filled in between by adding more spots. For the edges, I took paint from the spots with a brush. That worked quite well.
- Our garage is about 20 m² (215 sq ft). Painting it all at once worked quite well (including edging with the brush beforehand). However, as an inexperienced person, I would not recommend more square meters in one go. In terms of processing time, I was fairly on track, but since there is some sunlight at the front of the garage, you have to work quickly. The paint spots left slight marks at the front where the sun was shining. But that was also due to the morning sun directly hitting the area. Unfortunately, I was a little late because of the delay from stirring. I will carefully sand those edges before the final coat. I think the marks won’t be visible afterward.

And thanks for the compliment on the color. We wanted something vibrant. However, it will probably get a bit darker. The photo was taken while it was still wet. The color is RAL 3005 (Wine Red).
