Hello everyone,

in our building that is being renovated, there is a window measuring 1.26 x 1.26 meters (4.1 x 4.1 feet) facing the carport.

My idea is to replace this window with a side entrance door about 1.00 x 2.00 meters (3.3 x 6.6 feet). Expanding the window opening vertically, both upwards and downwards, seems quite doable to me.

However, the window will also have to be made narrower. The house was built in 1980 and has a brick veneer. I am already trying to source matching bricks in parallel.

Is such a modification generally straightforward to carry out, or am I likely to encounter problems?

Maybe you can remove the bricks installed below and above the window so they can be reused. You only need a width of 26cm (10 inches) and a height of 1.26 m (4 ft 1.7 inches). If you have to extend upwards, you will also need to raise the lintel. Are there any pipes (heating pipes) installed below the window? Otherwise, this should not be a problem for a professional company in the construction field, or do you want to do it yourself?

There is a radiator under the window, but it is going to be removed anyway.
No, I do not want to do the work myself. It should be properly handled by a professional company.

I just wanted to get some opinions beforehand to see if my ideas are even feasible.

Why not simply order a door that fits? If a professional company is going to do the work anyway, they can supply doors in any size. They can then build a door that fits properly. There are different options for this. You can either add a side panel or use a wider frame. Or you can simply choose a door with a larger width. This will definitely look better than patching up the masonry or brickwork, which will always be noticeable.

A door measuring 1.26 x 2.00 meters (4.13 x 6.56 feet) seems quite wide to me. I can't really picture it, but I will give it some more thought.

Can a door be too wide? I wouldn’t make the passage any narrower, and I wouldn’t add a side panel either, as that would make it too narrow. I’d rather go with a wider frame. Increasing the height is not so straightforward, while lowering it is usually not a problem.
If it were my house, I would probably choose a double-leaf patio door, as that also looks good in terms of width.
