ᐅ Why does my BILLY shelf squeak when I open it, and how can I fix it?

Hello everyone,

I recently got a Billy shelving unit from IKEA, which is basically great, but there is one annoying issue: the doors make a loud squeaking noise when opening. I don’t mean when closing, but specifically when opening the doors. The sound seems like metal or plastic rubbing together and is honestly quite unpleasant.

I have already checked if any screws are loose and didn’t find any major irregularities. Maybe it’s due to the hinges or pivot points?

Does anyone have experience with why the BILLY shelf squeaks when opening the doors and, most importantly, how I can fix this issue without much effort? Is there a recommended maintenance or lubricant to use? I want to prevent the noise from causing long-term damage to the materials.

Thanks in advance for serious and practical advice!

Hey,

watch out, that squeaking can really ruin your morning 🙂

In my experience, hinges can be easily smoothed with a small drop of sewing machine oil or even candle wax. Silicone spray works great, but if you need something quick, wax will do the job.

And don’t worry about squeaky shelves, it happens even with expensive products.

Good luck!

Wax is somewhat questionable because it can attract dirt. Sewing machine oil is tricky because it is liquid and not silicone-based. It’s better to use silicone spray.

Summary of Technical and Practical Insights:

- BILLY shelves use simple pivot hinges with plastic and metal components that can squeak due to friction if not properly lubricated.
- Screws should be checked regularly and tightened if necessary.
- The best lubrication solution is a silicone-based spray that doesn’t stick, doesn’t attract dust, and is compatible with plastic.
- Oils like WD-40 or other oil-based products can cause problems over time because they attract dust and cause hinges to stick.
- Alternatively, dry lubricants such as Teflon spray also work well.
- Cleaning the hinges before lubricating is important, for example with a dry cloth.

In households without high humidity or dust exposure, lubrication often lasts for 1-2 years.

This matches my observations well.

In conclusion: mechanical causes are usually the problem, not material defects. Regular maintenance keeps the function lasting a long time.
