I have recently noticed that the new KALLAX inserts from IKEA often have different dimensions compared to earlier models. My question is therefore deliberately specific: Why is this the case? Has IKEA intentionally changed the measurements, perhaps to better fit the inserts into new shelving units or for other production-related reasons? Or could there be different materials or design requirements that have led to changes in the dimensions? I would appreciate a well-informed opinion or explanation, preferably with reference to any updates in the KALLAX shelving systems or changes in the manufacturing process.

Oh, that’s actually an interesting observation! IKEA is known for constantly optimizing their products, sometimes making small changes to the dimensions. In my experience, this usually happens because they want to respond to feedback: adjustments for better fit and stability or to standardize the design.

Sometimes logistical factors come into play, such as more efficient packaging or transport. Or they might change the material thickness, which affects the external dimensions. In any case, I’m almost certain this isn’t a mistake but part of ongoing product development. 🙂

IKEA sometimes changes dimensions to make inserts compatible with new shelving systems. Standards for materials or structural stability can also play a role.

That may be true, but I often find there is a lack of evidence or official information. Are there any documents or statements from IKEA explaining why exactly the new dimensions were introduced?

I ask because such changes can also be driven by cost or production reasons, for example, cheaper manufacturing through reduced waste or altered material thicknesses. It could even be marketing strategies to promote new inserts more effectively.

It is important that we do not rely solely on speculation here but also hope for more concrete information.

That’s true, of course; IKEA tends to be rather reserved with details. But from conversations with people who work on IKEA products, I know they are constantly refining dimensional accuracy and modularity internally.

That’s an important point as well: more and more KALLAX shelves are available in different depth versions, and the inserts need to be adjusted accordingly.

Personally, I see this positively: it improves flexibility, even if it can be confusing at first because some parts no longer fit exactly 1:1.
