Hello everyone, I have a question that has been on my mind for a while, which I noticed with my IKEA Billy shelves: Why do some Billy doors start squeaking only after some time of use, and not right from the beginning?

I have observed that the squeaking often only appears after a few months or even years, even though the doors worked perfectly fine at first. I suspect it might be related to the material properties or possibly the hinges, but I’m curious about the exact causes and how to prevent or maybe fix it.

Could it also be connected to humidity, wear and tear, or installation? I look forward to well-informed opinions or personal experiences from those who are familiar with this issue.

This is a very good and practical question! Generally, this squeaking is caused by friction in the hinges or at the contact points of the door. Initially, the hinges are usually well-lubricated or operate smoothly, but over time, dust, dirt, or moisture can accumulate, reducing the effectiveness of the lubricant.

Additionally, small wood fibers can warp or swell due to fluctuations in humidity, which changes the pressure on the hinges and increases friction. Furthermore, the IKEA hinge mechanisms often contain plastic parts that can become harder or more brittle over time.

To prevent this, I recommend regularly re-lubricating the hinges with a suitable lubricant, such as silicone spray. Checking and tightening the screws often helps as well. Sometimes, simply cleaning the hinges can solve the problem.

To understand the cause of the delayed squeaking, it is important to closely examine the physical processes occurring at the hinges and contact points. Initially, hinges are usually coated with a thin layer of grease upon delivery and installation, which prevents noise. This protective film can wear off or shift over time due to skin contact, dust particles, or mechanical stress.

As usage progresses, microscopic wear particles spread, reducing the lubricating effect. Moisture often plays a crucial role: when wood becomes damp, it swells slightly, leading to changed pressure conditions on the hinge pins. This is especially true for the Billy, which is typically made of particleboard with veneer, and experiences such hygroscopic effects.

That perfectly describes the issue! I would add that improper installation, such as slightly loosened hinge screws, can alter the friction surface and speed up squeaking.

Besides cleaning and regular lubrication, relief can be found by using special assembly paste or Teflon spray, which are better suited for plastic-metal connections. It is important not to simply use WD-40 or oil, as these can attract dust or damage the plastic.

Could you describe in more detail how often and under what conditions (humidity, temperature) you notice the squeaking? That would help provide more targeted advice.

The squeaking is caused by wear on the hinges and a lack of lubricant on the moving parts. To fix it, simply clean the hinges thoroughly and apply a suitable lubricant.

If the door leaf or frame warps slightly due to moisture, this can increase pressure on the hinges and cause the squeaking.

Here is a simple guide on how to systematically address the squeaking of Billy doors:

1. Remove the doors: This makes the work more precise and prevents damage.
2. Inspect the hinges carefully: Are they clean and free from coarse dirt?
3. Cleaning: Use a lint-free cloth with alcohol or a mild cleaner to clean the hinges.
4. Lubrication: Use silicone spray or Teflon spray specifically designed for furniture hardware – these are low odor and attract very little dust.
5. Check the screws: Are all screws tight? A loose hinge can cause more noise.
6. Rehang the door and test its function.

Common mistake: Many people think WD-40 is a lubricant, but it is actually a penetrating oil and attracts dust, which can worsen the situation over time.

Also helpful: Check if the door is adjusted too tightly, putting too much pressure on the hinges. Especially in rooms with fluctuating humidity, the seals change and cause the squeaky noise.

Following these steps will reliably help solve the problem permanently.

Wow, it’s amazing how much you can learn about such everyday things! 🙂

I had the same problem, and after using the silicone spray tips, the noise stopped. Just remember to repeat it every few months, especially when the room climate is more humid.

And hey, don’t be afraid of small maintenance tasks on your furniture—it really pays off! 🙂
