Hi,
This summer I’m buying a house (alone). I will take some of the furniture and the stove from the previous owner (in this case my parents^^) and am paying 3000€ for that.
What I still need:
- Washing machine (my parents will pay for this since my siblings also got one when they moved out)
- Dryer (300-400€)
- Large freezer (at least 500€)
- Large bedroom wardrobe (300-500€)
- Sofa set (1000-1500€)
- Lawn mower (I’m estimating at least 500€ because I want a decent one; lawn area approximately 1500m² (16000 sq ft))
- Garden furniture (I’m budgeting around 1000€ because I definitely don’t want stackable chairs or similar)
So all in all, I’m expecting to spend at least 4000€ plus the 3000€ for the items I’m taking over. With various small expenses, maybe add another 1000€ on top.
Now my question is simply how to handle this financially, or how you usually deal with it. I’ve already agreed with my girlfriend that she will pay me 400€ in rent. The rest (groceries, etc.) will be shared normally.
I’m wondering whether I should cover everything myself or if we should split the costs. After all, it’s my house, but I’m not sure. Just wanted to ask how you usually manage this.

If someone is still in training, unemployed, or has little to no income to contribute to any household expenses, why bother stressing them? You have a community where each person contributes what they can or what they are best at.
If you ever decide to separate, I would still consider the belongings as joint property and divide them according to the needs of everyone involved.
Rent: another topic. How much do you have to pay monthly for the house? Isn’t $400 a bit much for someone in vocational training?

At the beginning of our relationship, we agreed that each person would pay for their own furniture and could take it with them later if needed. I bought the 3-seater sofa, she bought the armchair. At the time of the separation, she could have taken the armchair with her 🙂
If she pays for the lawn mower now and you take it with you when you separate, you just buy a new one (or buy the old one from her). At some point, we started sharing the furniture costs equally.
In the end, everyone pays what they can and are willing to spend. I wanted a quality projector, she didn’t. So I bought it myself. She wanted good garden chairs; I only wanted a sun lounger. I bought the lounger, she bought the chairs (and I bought the table because she was out of money ^^ ).
