Hello everyone,

I’m currently planning to assemble an Ikea Kallax shelving unit in my apartment and wondering if it’s worth the effort to also secure the unit to the wall using brackets. I’m particularly interested in whether using brackets makes a noticeable difference in stability and safety, especially if the shelf might bear some weight or if there are children in the household.

Does anyone have practical experience with this? Is the Kallax stable enough on its own, or does it tend to wobble during normal use? How much extra work does it take to install the brackets, and what materials or methods would you recommend? I’d like to gather well-informed insights before I start drilling :-)

Thanks in advance for your opinions and tips!

Hey! I’ve attached my Kallax shelf in the kitchen to the wall using brackets—and I can only say: totally recommend it 😎. Not because the shelf would tip over otherwise, but especially if you stack it higher or have kids around, it just gives you peace of mind.

The effort? Well, a bit of drilling, attaching the brackets, and you’re done. I always use sturdy metal brackets with appropriate wall plugs depending on the wall type (concrete/masonry), and it holds really well. Bonus: you can also use the corner brackets to stabilize uneven floors—my floor isn’t perfect, so this keeps everything level.

Conclusion: For me, the small effort is definitely worth it, especially since I want to use the shelf safely and for a long time. But if you only load the shelf lightly and it’s placed against a solid wall, you might decide to skip it 🙂

Good morning,

I generally recommend securing larger furniture pieces like the Kallax shelving unit, especially if there are children in the household. While the Kallax modules are built to be sturdy, their height combined with the often shallow depth can make them prone to tipping if they are not anchored to the wall.

Regarding the effort involved: Installing brackets for wall attachment is relatively straightforward with the right tools (drill, spirit level, wall plugs) and typically takes about 20-30 minutes (depending on the wall type). It is important to choose the correct fixings for the wall—such as cavity anchors for drywall or expansion anchors for solid walls.

In addition to brackets, there are also special shelf anchors or anti-tip devices available, which are usually even easier to install.

In conclusion: If safety is a priority, especially with babies or toddlers around, the effort is definitely worthwhile.

I would like to add that while Kallax shelves have a sturdy construction, there is inherently a relatively high risk of tipping when loaded unfavorably.

That’s a good point. This is especially important with children, as they might see the furniture as something to climb on. Securing the shelves to the wall with brackets is technically simple and cost-effective – most brackets can be found cheaply at hardware stores.

Practical tip: Make sure the brackets are fastened to a load-bearing part of the wall, not just to drywall without additional reinforcement. The screws should also be suitable for the wall type. When in doubt, it’s better to invest a bit more effort and, if necessary, seek professional advice.

In summary: Yes, I consider securing Kallax shelves to the wall with brackets a sensible measure, especially for safety reasons.

From a technical perspective, Kallax shelves are designed to support vertical loads without wall attachment but are not engineered to resist tipping forces. This increases the risk of the unit falling over if it is not secured.

Attaching metal brackets is a proven and practical method to enhance stability against tipping. Brackets should be made of sturdy metal and installed using appropriate screws and suitable anchors. Choosing the correct mounting hardware is essential to prevent subsequent damage.

Regarding the effort involved: installation is standardized, requires basic tools (drill, screwdriver or cordless drill), and typically takes 15–30 minutes depending on the floor and wall conditions.

Whether the effort is worthwhile depends on:
- The intended use (load, frequency)
- Household composition (children, pets)
- Wall stability

Conclusion: For safety reasons, securing the unit to the wall with brackets is recommended and is usually simple to implement.

I completely agree! I fixed my Kallax shelf to the wall with brackets two years ago, and I can say it gives a much more reassuring feeling, especially since, like me, you might have two cats that love to jump onto every shelf out of curiosity.

The effort was minimal compared to the added safety, and nothing has shifted since then.

How time-consuming is the extra step with brackets?

I did it on a Saturday morning—overall it took less than an hour, including measuring, drilling, and screwing.

My tip: When buying brackets, pay attention to size and load capacity, and use appropriate wall plugs, depending on your wall material.
