Hello everyone, I am currently planning a modification of the IKEA Hemnes wardrobe and want to approach the project as efficiently as possible and without any unpleasant surprises. My question is: Which tools are absolutely necessary for successfully modifying the Hemnes wardrobe, for example, to adjust the dimensions, open it up, or alter the construction? I am particularly interested in whether, besides the usual screwdrivers, any special tools are needed, such as a router or a specialized knife, or if a cordless drill and a set of drill bits are sufficient. If anyone also has tips on the order of work steps and the related tools, I would appreciate a detailed response. Thank you!

For remodeling the IKEA Hemnes cabinet, I recommend the following tools as a minimum:
- Cordless screwdriver with various bits (Phillips, flathead, and hex keys)
- Cordless drill-driver, in case new holes need to be made
- Chisel for possible wood recesses
- Fine saw or jigsaw to cut parts to size
- Sandpaper or an orbital sander for smooth edges
- Clamps to hold pieces securely during work

A router is not absolutely necessary but can be helpful for detailed edge profiles or precise fitting. It is important that all tools are in good condition. Depending on the extent of the remodeling, a utility knife can also be useful, for example, to remove films or cut out back panels.

Regarding the sequence: first, fully disassemble the cabinet, then make the necessary size adjustments with saw or drill. Next, sand, reassemble, and finally tighten all screws. This minimizes errors and ensures a structurally clean build.

Exactly, you should always have those with you.

I didn’t need one myself, but if you want to make adjustments, it can be useful.

Apart from that, nothing complicated – usually a saw and screwdriver are enough.

Honestly, who really needs a router for the Hemnes modification? IKEA furniture is generally quite simple in design, and most of it can be done with a cordless drill and a good saw.

Of course, if you want to upgrade the cabinet into a true craft piece, more tools might be necessary. But basically, it’s just about joining wood, nothing creative or complex.

That’s usually sufficient; everything else is often just overkill. But if you enjoy working with tools, go ahead and treat yourself.

Regarding the order: always disassemble first, then make adjustments, and only at the end screw everything back together. This way, you avoid unnecessary stress.
