Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought an IKEA Hemnes sideboard, and unfortunately, the wood is starting to come apart in some areas, and some of the joints are giving way. Since I want to repair the furniture myself, I’m interested in which tools are best suited for properly fixing common issues with Hemnes furniture. This includes tightening screws, securing loose parts, or repairing small wood damages.

Can you tell me which tools should definitely be included in a repair kit for Hemnes furniture? I’m especially interested in tools that are handy but still effective. Should I use specific screwdrivers? Or are tools for gluing and clamping more helpful?

Are there different recommendations depending on the type of Hemnes furniture being repaired (e.g., wardrobe vs. bed)? I look forward to your tips and detailed advice!

Hello carsta,

your question is very good and important, especially with Hemnes furniture, as it is usually made from solid pine wood, which has some special considerations during repairs.

Basically, I would say the following tools are useful for most Hemnes repairs:

- A set of Phillips screwdrivers (PH2 and PH3), since IKEA often uses these screws and you can easily loosen and tighten all the connecting screws with them.
- A cordless drill with variable torque control is highly recommended to tighten the screws carefully without damaging the wood.
- Wood glue (preferably a strong D3 or D4 grade glue suitable for kitchen use) for repairing loose or cracked parts.
- Clamps (strap clamps or screw clamps) to hold glued areas securely for at least 30 minutes.
- A small rubber mallet or a light hammer with a wooden block to position parts without damage during assembly.

For larger furniture like beds, bigger clamps might be useful, and possibly a ratchet or a wrench for the connecting hardware, as these often include metal fittings.

Ideally, before starting repairs, clean the furniture well and check all screws, because sometimes simply tightening them is enough. I hope this helps you for now!

Hello everyone,

I would like to provide a more detailed explanation of the tools and procedures for repairing Hemnes furniture because choosing the right tools is crucial for a good result.

Hemnes furniture is sturdy but can be vulnerable to certain mechanical stresses, especially at joints made of wood or wood-based materials. Tools that have proven effective in these repairs include:

- Screwdriver: The most important tool is a quality Phillips screwdriver size PH2 because IKEA often uses metric screws with Phillips heads. Cheap screwdrivers or ones with heads that are too large or too small can damage the screw heads ("rounding them off"), making repairs more difficult.

- Cordless drill/driver: As mentioned before, one with adjustable torque is useful, but be careful! Too much torque can tear the wood or strip the screw head. I recommend setting it low and tightening screws gradually.

- Wood glue: Choosing the right glue is essential. Solid wood furniture requires water-resistant glue (D3 or D4 rated). Interior-use glue is not ideal. Important: Clamp the glued parts firmly after applying the glue (see below).

- Clamps: Screw clamps in various sizes work best. Depending on the repair, clamps or ratchet straps can also be helpful, especially for larger frames.

- Small helpers: A rubber mallet helps gently fit parts together without damaging the wood. Tweezers or a small knife can be useful for removing old glue residue.

My answer: Both! Screwdrivers and cordless drills for tightening screws, wood glue and clamps for stabilizing.

Finally, one question: What kind of damage does your Hemnes furniture have? Is it loose joints, chipped wood, or loose screws? This will help refine the list of necessary tools.

I fully agree.

In addition, clamps are essential for secure glue joints.

Using the right screwdriver is half the battle.

That’s exactly how I see it too.

I can add this: For minor damages like scratches or surface abrasions, a putty knife and furniture wax or wax paste are suitable to restore the appearance. Small holes or imperfections in the wood can also be filled with wood filler before gluing again.

And very important: Use the cordless drill carefully, don’t apply too much force at once, and if possible, tighten by hand afterward.

For larger furniture, hex keys (Allen wrenches) are often needed as well. Since the Hemnes series changes over time, it’s best to check the included assembly guide to see which tools are recommended.

If you like, please describe exactly what you need to repair, so we can tailor the advice even more.
