Hello everyone,

I am planning to carry out some repairs on my IKEA Hemnes furniture, which has been in use for several years and has worn in some areas. I am wondering which tools are best suited for such repairs, especially when it comes to properly removing or replacing screws and dowels, swapping out small wooden parts, and restoring the stability of the furniture.

From your experience, which hand tools are most effective for fixing damage to Hemnes furniture without causing additional harm to the wood or joints? I am thinking about tools like a cordless drill with an appropriate bit set, possibly special wood glue applicators, screwdrivers, pliers, or other aids such as striking tools.

If anyone has practical tips or recommendations for specific equipment that is particularly useful when repairing Hemnes wood pieces, I would greatly appreciate a detailed response.

Thanks in advance!

For Hemnes, a good Phillips screwdriver and a cordless drill with the appropriate bits are sufficient. Use wood glue for holes and, if needed, wooden dowels for added stability. No special tools are required.

Basically, for repairs on Hemnes furniture, you need a combination of precise hand tools and a few additional tools to ensure stability and avoid damaging the wood.

1. Cordless drill/driver: Ideally, choose models with adjustable torque settings to apply the right amount of force when driving screws, preventing damage to the material. A set with common bits (Phillips PH1 and PH2, as well as flathead screwdrivers) is useful.

2. Screwdrivers: Manually, you should be able to manage with high-quality Phillips and flathead screwdrivers, especially for screws that are tight. Quality tools help prevent rounding off the screw heads.

3. Hammer and wooden dowels: When joints become loose, it often helps to replace old dowels or insert new ones. A rubber mallet is useful for gently assembling wooden parts.

4. Wood glue: Using good-quality wood glue is important for bonding and repairing cracked areas or when inserting dowels.

5. Pliers: Needle-nose pliers can assist in removing broken screw fragments or carefully pulling out nails.

What exactly is the nature of your damage? Knowing this would help provide more specific recommendations.

Thank you for the detailed response! The issues are mostly loose screws at the joints, some minor chips on the edges, and in one spot, a wooden dowel has broken, which has caused instability. The back panel also has a damaged area in the corner where the nail has partially slipped out.

I want to avoid rounding off the screw heads or enlarging the holes in the wood due to improper tools. I’m also interested to know if there are specific tools for safely removing damaged screws. I would definitely use wood glue, but I’m unsure which type is best for Hemnes, as it combines solid wood and veneered surfaces.

Are there any recommendations for particular types of dowels or repair kits that have proven effective?

The described damages are typical for wooden furniture like Hemnes, where screws at joints often loosen due to constant stress or dowels break.

For safely removing worn screws, I recommend a screw extractor set specifically designed for damaged screw heads. These tools grip precisely and minimize the risk of further damaging the material.

I have long successfully used a good liquid wood glue, for example, a D2- or D3-tested polyvinyl acetate adhesive (PVA glue), on solid wood and veneered surfaces. It provides very good adhesion, dries transparent, and does not warp the wood.

Regarding wooden dowels: Solid beech wood dowels are standard, and in case of damage, it is best to use dowels of the same size. There are also so-called screw dowels that make reinserting easier with screws and provide long-lasting stability. It is important to properly prepare the old dowel holes and fill them with wood glue before inserting new dowels.

As additional aids, I recommend metal brackets or corner connectors if you want to increase stability in the long term without visible changes to the furniture's front appearance.

I hope this helps you with the repair.

This is an important point I would like to add: Not all wood glues are equally suitable for furniture exposed to frequent changes in load. In my opinion, a D3-rated glue is preferable to D2, especially for kitchen furniture or pieces that are sometimes exposed to more humid environments.

Furthermore, I believe the question of the right tools should also include the condition of the screws themselves: To what extent are the screws rusty or damaged? A standard Phillips screwdriver can fail on worn heads—here, screwdrivers with magnetized tips and a ratcheting function, in my view, perform better as they make loosening easier and reduce the chance of cam-out.

Cordless screwdriver with torque control
is generally correct, but the user must still be cautious. Sometimes a high-quality manual screwdriver offers better control, especially with older furniture, to avoid overtightening.

I am curious whether Meopo will also mention the tool needed to repair the back panel, which is often overlooked despite its crucial contribution to overall stability.
