Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into which connection in the IKEA BILLY shelf is the most stressed or vulnerable after extended, regular use—especially screw connections, shelf brackets, or slot connections.

I am particularly interested in which parts tend to wear out or lose stability the most due to frequent assembly and disassembly, load changes, or frequent opening (in the case of BILLY with doors). Are there any experiences regarding whether the dowels inside the shelf, the screws on the side panels, or the shelf supports suffer the most?

The goal is to identify potential weak points early on and to better plan for spare parts or maintenance. Thanks for your insights and experiences!

The shelf supports are often the weakest point. They tend to break after frequent removal or under heavy load. Screws in the side walls usually hold up longer under normal use.

From a technical perspective, the plastic shelf supports are indeed the most stressed components in the BILLY shelf unit. These parts are made of brittle plastic, which becomes mechanically fatigued and brittle over time due to repeated insertion and removal as well as load changes.

Screws in the side panels are designed for permanent load-bearing, but over time their stability also decreases, for example due to loose screws caused by vibration or adjustment.

Wooden dowels, on the other hand, tend to warp with moisture exposure but are less susceptible to mechanical damage under normal use.

In short: For frequent use such as assembly and disassembly, the plastic supports suffer the most, while screws can remain in good condition with some maintenance.

Absolutely, those things are really the most fragile parts in the BILLY shelving unit! I once had my daughter remove the shelves, and two of the supports immediately broke. 🙂

But honestly, if you want your shelf to last longer, invest in replacement supports – they don’t cost much and will save you from a surprise mess on the living room floor caused by the kids.

One more thing: screws are generally strong, but with frequent movement of the “door-like” shelves, the screws can sometimes loosen. So make sure to tighten them from time to time to keep the shelf stable and happy. 😉
