Hello everyone, I am currently looking closely into Malm furniture from Ikea and have noticed that many buyers need replacement parts sooner or later. I would like to know: Which replacement parts are most commonly needed for Malm furniture and why? I am especially interested in whether there are typical weak points in these pieces that often require repairs, such as drawer slides, handles, screws, or other components. Which parts are most heavily used in practice, and how is the availability of replacements? Does anyone have experience with the durability of individual components and maybe some tips on where to reliably obtain suitable replacement parts?

Which spare parts are most commonly needed for Malm furniture and why?

Oh, that’s a good question! 😊 From my experience and what I’ve heard from friends, the drawer slides on Malm furniture tend to show wear first. After a while, they don’t run as smoothly or may catch. Usually, it’s less about the mechanism itself and more because the small plastic rollers often break or the guide rails get slightly bent.

Handles also sometimes come loose—nothing against the design, but during moves or frequent use, a handle can become loose or even break off. Then the screws aren’t always easy to find since the original screws from Ikea aren’t always sold separately, which can be frustrating.

In short: if you have Malm furniture, keep an eye on the drawer slides (especially the rollers and guides) and the handles. Replacement rollers and suitable screws can be found online here and there or even ordered directly from Ikea in parts. So don’t worry, these are common issues :-)

I agree with that, and I can add some technical insights: The Malm series mostly uses metal-reinforced drawer slides with plastic rollers, which tend to show noticeable wear under load and frequent use. Especially on drawers subjected to loads over 15-20 kg (33-44 lbs), the rollers can break relatively quickly or the guide rail can bend.

Additionally, the installation of the drawers is often crucial. If the screws are not tightened properly or the slide rail is even slightly misaligned, this increases stress on individual components, leading to earlier wear.

Screws and fasteners are also among the commonly sought replacement parts. Since Ikea often uses special screws for Malm that match both the appearance and material, many users look for screw sets to buy because they can be lost during assembly or come loose and wear out over time.

For drawer slides, I recommend that in case of damage, you not only replace the broken part but also check the mounting and securing of the slide to prevent further damage. If handles are involved, those made from plastic should also be considered, as they tend to become brittle over time. Replacement parts for these are sometimes hard to get directly from Ikea, but specialized third-party manufacturers or forums can be good sources.

Now I’m curious: xiang, have you identified any specific faulty parts on your Malm furniture? That might help address the issue more precisely.

Which replacement parts for Malm furniture are most in demand and why?

Based on various user reports and repair tips, I can outline the following clearly:

1. Drawer slides (rails and plastic rollers): These are most commonly needed due to mechanical stress and wear.
2. Handles and knobs: They tend to break or get lost, especially with frequent use or moving.
3. Screws and fasteners: Often misplaced or damaged after multiple assemblies and disassemblies.
4. Back panels and back coverings: Less common, but important if the furniture is repositioned and the back panel gets damaged.

In general, original replacement parts from Ikea are often only available as sets. Individual parts, especially replacement rollers and screws, can be difficult to obtain. Demand for spare parts is high because Malm furniture is frequently used and its modular design can lead to technical issues more easily.

My advice: Before repairing, check whether replacing the entire drawer slide unit is more cost-effective and durable than using individual spare parts – this saves time and increases longevity.

If requested, I can also provide sources that serve as reliable alternatives.
