Hello everyone, I have purchased some Malm furniture from IKEA to furnish the children's room. However, I am concerned about how to make these pieces as child-friendly as possible since the sharp edges and potentially unstable parts are a problem for me in everyday life with toddlers.
I am particularly interested in which measures and practical modifications you would recommend to make Malm dressers, beds, or cabinets safe and functional for small children without completely losing the style.
Are there proven protective devices, alternative handles, anchors, or other solutions to prevent tipping or injury? I want to avoid having to improvise later, as safety and everyday usability are the top priorities.
Do you have any experience or tips you can share? Thanks in advance for your answers!

It’s great that you’re putting so much thought into this! :-)
I protected the edges of our Malm dressers with self-adhesive silicone edge protectors. They make the corners really soft and are hardly visible. Also, definitely secure the furniture to the wall to prevent tipping.
I replaced the handles with larger, child-friendly ones that are easier to grip and look nice too! This way, the safety of little ones can be much better ensured – which is really motivating to keep at it! 🙂

To make Malm furniture child-friendly, I recommend a three-step approach:
1. Furniture anchoring: Secure all dressers and cabinets with special wall anchors, which IKEA also offers. This prevents tipping when pressure is applied.
2. Edge protection: Attach soft edge guards made of foam or silicone to the corners. These are available in various widths and colors and can be removed without leaving residue.
3. Functional modifications: Replace handles with child-friendly, rounded, or softer alternatives to avoid injuries. Equip drawers with dampers for quiet and gentle closing.
Common mistakes include relying only on edge protection without anchoring – this is not sufficient. Drawers should also be secured against full extension, even for toddlers, to prevent them from falling on children.
Finally, I recommend always choosing high-quality products and ensuring the strength of the anchors, as this is not an area to cut costs.

I experimented a bit with some fun, colorful corner protectors at our place. They don’t look too bad if you install them cleverly and want to add a bit of color to the room.
Securing them to the wall is really essential; otherwise, you can plan on tidying up after falls right away. My kids love pulling on the drawers – so I fitted them with appropriate child safety locks that aren’t too frustrating but still do the job.
For the bed, it often helps to add a few extra trim pieces underneath so there are no sharp points sticking out. You can then also arrange cozy, padded fabrics around them.

Safety for Malm furniture can be effectively improved through the following measures:
1. Use of tested wall fasteners such as IKEA FIXA or comparable branded products.
2. Use edge protection profiles made of tested, non-toxic materials that are antibacterial and free of harmful plasticizers.
3. The interchangeability of handles should be considered from an ergonomic perspective to ensure easy and safe opening and closing.
4. Installing soft-close mechanisms reduces the risk of finger injuries with drawers.
5. Consider high-quality child safety locks for drawers and doors that do not significantly interfere with everyday use.
These measures are supported by test reports from various consumer protection organizations and significantly increase operational safety.
