Hello everyone, I am currently looking into the stability of the shelves in the IKEA PAX wardrobe system. My question is: Which shelves in the PAX system are particularly sturdy and suitable for heavier loads, such as several filled binders or heavy clothing? I am especially interested in whether there are differences in material thickness or design, and if there are any shelves outside the standard system that might be recommended. I look forward to your experiences and tips!

With very wide shelves, the load-bearing capacity can be lower because the bowing increases.Exactly. I have used 100cm (40 inches) wide shelves in my Pax and noticed that even with reinforcement, the shelves tend to sag slightly under heavy loads. I recommend adding reinforced center supports or installing extra legs inside wide cabinets.
Great tips here! I wanted to add that, besides the reinforced shelves, PAX glass doors also provide a certain level of stability because they stiffen the cabinet frame. If stability is essential, you should not only focus on the shelves but also consider the entire cabinet setup. This significantly improves overall stability.
For maximum stability under heavy loads, reinforced floors should be used and cabinets should not be designed too wide. Wide floors are more likely to bend. Additionally, extra middle supports or separately purchased steel beams can help. Glass fronts or back panels further increase stability.

Alternatively, you can fit thicker wooden panels yourself into the system, but this requires more carpentry skills. Thanks for the advice! I’m still considering whether to use the reinforced IKEA shelves or to opt for my own, thicker panels. Does anyone have experience with custom-cut wooden panels in the PAX system? How well do they fit, and how does their stability compare?
