Hello,

we are currently designing our garden.
We plan to get a robotic lawn mower in the future, which should be able to mow the lawn independently up to the edges.

We haven't decided on a model yet, as we want to buy it in 1–2 years, but we want to arrange the garden now so that the mower can operate flawlessly without any modifications.

My question to you is: what is the minimum width a mowing edge stone should have so that the most common robotic lawn mowers have no problems?

Is 12cm (5 inches) probably not enough?

Would 16cm (6 inches) be sufficient, or is that still too narrow?

24cm (9.5 inches) should probably be enough, but it is quite thick visually.

The mowing edge stones will border the lawn to the terrace, flower beds, garden wall, and garden shed.
Behind the stones, there will be a level bed as well as a wall, such as a garden wall or garden shed.

Thank you very much for your help.

24cm (9.5 inches) or more. It is also practical for walking around the garden without getting your feet wet. Especially when there is a wall behind, depending on the design, 30-35cm (12-14 inches) is needed.

So, we have a 16 cm (6 inches) planting strip with the boundary wire installed in front of it, following Gardena’s instructions. It works without any problems. I can even walk along it around the garden. We don’t have any walls by the lawn, so I can’t comment on that.
