I recently purchased an Ikea Platsa shelving system and am now trying to figure out the best lighting solutions to go with it. I’m looking for lighting that integrates well with the slim, modular design, providing optimal illumination for the compartments without being too intrusive. It’s also important to me that the solution is easy to install and possibly controllable via remote or app, since the PLATSA can be flexibly moved and expanded. Does anyone have experience with specific LED strips, spotlights, or maybe lighting systems that work particularly well? I’m happy to receive tips, including on installation, color temperature, and power supply.

I can easily understand how challenging it is to find the right lighting for the PLATSA system, since the shelves often have varying depths and heights depending on the configuration. In my experience, a combination of slim LED light strips mounted inside on the sides works well. It is important to choose a warm color temperature (2700 to 3000K [49°F to 54°F]) to avoid the light appearing too clinical. At first, I also had doubts about whether the simple adhesive mounting would hold, but I was pleasantly surprised by how well it works with Ikea products. If you have any questions about installation, I’m happy to help.
A really good lighting solution for Ikea PLATSA depends heavily on your individual usage requirements. Here is a detailed recommended approach:
- First, note the exact measurements of the shelving compartments, as the lighting should appear as flush and even as possible.
- LED light strips are highly suitable, especially smart versions that can be controlled via an app. It is important to pay attention to the quality of the LEDs and the color rendering index (CRI). Values above 80 are ideal for living spaces.
- For power supply, either a discreet right-angle plug with hidden cable management is a good solution, or the integration of a battery system if there is no nearby outlet.
- For mounting, I recommend double-sided adhesive pads suitable for LEDs to prevent the strips from slipping. Alternatively, small clips can be used if you want to rearrange the shelves easily.
- Color temperature: If the PLATSA is used in a living area, aim for 2700 to 3000K (warm white). For work areas, neutral white (4000K) can also be appropriate.
I’m interested to know whether you plan to use the shelf mainly for storage or as a display area. This influences whether the lighting should be primarily functional or decorative.

I would also like to point out that the choice of lighting depends on the material color of the PLATSA. Light-colored fronts reflect light better, so fewer light sources are needed. For dark surfaces, it is better to plan with somewhat stronger light sources.
In addition, integrating the wiring is an important factor. IKEA PLATSA often has limited space inside the shelves, so I recommend flexible LED strips with a slim profile and as flat connectors as possible. For control, simple wireless solutions are ideal, provided they are compatible with existing smart home systems.
If a device with remote control is desired, a set with a dimmer and adjustable color temperature would be advantageous. Many users underestimate how important adjusting light intensity and color is for the atmosphere.

I’m curious whether you plan to use the shelving mainly for storage or as a display area.I’d like to briefly address that: In my case, I use the PLATSA primarily as a combination of both. That’s why I chose dimmable LED strips, which I can adjust to different brightness levels depending on how I’m using it. This creates a cozy atmosphere in the evening and provides enough light for searching during the day. Therefore, I consider app control to be a very important feature.
