Good morning everyone,

I am planning to get an Ikea Pax wardrobe and want to focus especially on high durability and robustness of the wardrobe doors for everyday use. Since the doors will be frequently opened and closed and sometimes subjected to heavier use, I am interested in:

Which Ikea Pax doors are particularly durable for daily use? Are there models known for resistant materials, sturdy hinges, or long-lasting surface finishes? I would appreciate any experiences with long-term use or specific recommendations.

Thank you in advance for your insights!

Hello TEORON,

regarding your question about which Ikea Pax doors are particularly durable for everyday use, I can share some insights since I have used various versions for over 5 years. Basically, the doors differ significantly in terms of material and hardware:

- Solid wood-look doors, which have a sturdy MDF (medium-density fiberboard) core and are covered with a foil or paint finish, are resistant to impacts but can be more prone to scratches depending on the surface.
- Mirror and glass fronts have a very hard surface, but they are more sensitive to impacts and can shatter easily if not handled carefully.
- High-gloss fronts, usually made of painted MDF, look nice but scratches and signs of wear show up quickly, and their mechanical durability is moderate.
- Solid wood frame fronts are very sturdy but usually more expensive and require more maintenance.

The hinges really make a big difference. Ikea generally uses well-made soft-close hinges that hold up well. I recommend regularly checking the hinges if the doors see heavy use and possibly upgrading to higher-quality dampers.

I would be interested to know how heavily the doors are used in your case (e.g., frequent opening, stress from handles, presence of children in the household). This information helps to better assess which option makes the most sense.

I can confirm that. I have the Pax wardrobes in my living room, and they are used daily. I find the sliding doors with frosted glass particularly durable because they are really stable thanks to the aluminum frame and last a long time even in a household with children. However, they are a bit more expensive and need to be kept clean to avoid visible fingerprints.

Personally, I would recommend doors with a melamine or CPL (continuous pressure laminate) surface if you are looking for something especially scratch-resistant. During my last renovation, I chose the ‘Lerberg’ doors with white melamine coating and have been very satisfied with their practicality for everyday use. They are also easy to clean.

One more tip: If you assemble the doors yourself, make sure the hinges are properly adjusted. Doors that are incorrectly aligned wear out faster and can warp.

Good luck with your decision!

I really like this question because durable doesn’t always mean bulky or unattractive! My favorite are the white frame fronts with cream-beige glass panels. They’re not only sturdy but also look soft and homely. The glass has a rich matte finish, so you won’t see every fingerprint—a real plus, especially when you don’t have time to clean.

In addition, I’ve found that slightly textured surfaces like melamine handle everyday scratches better than high-gloss fronts—and Ikea’s soft-close mechanisms are really good. I recently lubricated ours, which made opening even smoother.

My advice: consider how often and intensively the doors will be used. If you have kids or tend to close doors quickly, I’d opt for a surface that still looks good after years of use—melamine or matte finishes work great. You can also extend the life of the hinges with simple maintenance, like occasional lubrication. 😉
