Hello everyone, I am currently exploring which DIY projects work especially well with Ikea Hemnes furniture. Hemnes is known for its rather classic, timeless design made from solid wood, which fits well into many interior styles. My question is: which DIY projects or modifications are suitable for improving or personalizing the functionality or appearance of Hemnes furniture? I am particularly interested in how, with moderate DIY skills but effective changes, the character of the furniture can be preserved or highlighted. I look forward to your experiences and suggestions!

Which methods are realistic without requiring special workshop conditions?

Good question! For DIY enthusiasts without a workshop, chalk paints are truly the easiest option: they adhere well to painted wood and usually only need surface preparation like light sanding with fine-grit sandpaper.

Stains generally require more experience and usually the removal of old paint to achieve good results. Oils (wood oils, such as linseed oil or specialized furniture oils) can also be applied to raw or very lightly sanded wood without intensive sanding, but they tend to change the color effect only subtly.

Conclusion: For color changes, I initially recommend chalk paints or suitable furniture sprays if you only want to slightly alter the light design.

My favorite: converting a small Hemnes nightstand into a stylish mini bar with a few wooden shelves and a clip-on light

I think it’s important to consider the functional aspect of such DIY projects. How sturdy is this mini bar version really? Hemnes furniture is quite solid, but adding extra wooden elements or lighting could mean additional stress and wiring.

Furthermore, I wonder if custom paint finishes and technical modifications might affect the resale value. Those who need to take this into account should probably view these projects as temporary solutions or design them to be modular.
