Hello everyone, I’m currently considering which DIY projects work particularly well with the Ikea Hemnes furniture series. I plan to enhance or repurpose a few pieces, preferably with manageable effort and materials that are easy to obtain. I’m especially interested in ideas where small design changes or additions can improve functionality or personalize the look. What experiences, recommendations, or creative suggestions do you have? I find projects especially exciting when they are both practical and visually appealing, for example, modifications of dressers, beds, or shelves from the Hemnes range.

You can easily change the color of HEMNES, for example, but what about more complex modifications?

That’s exactly what I’m thinking: basic color changes are clear, and I’ll definitely do those myself. But I’m also looking for projects where more extensive alterations are made, such as repurposing a piece of furniture without compromising its stability.

I’d like to know if your focus is more on visual upgrades or functional enhancements?

That’s a good question – I want both, but if I had to prioritize, it would be mainly functional with a certain aesthetic appeal. For example, a chest of drawers that I keep in its basic design but modify for a new, specific use.

Are there any concrete examples of how to convert something like a shoe cabinet into a media console? What are the key things to watch out for when doing this kind of project for the first time?

For repurposing a Hemnes dresser, for example as a media cabinet:
- Important steps include carefully removing the back panel to allow proper cable management. In the HEMNES series, back panels are often made of thin MDF boards fastened with staples, so caution is needed to avoid damage.
- A sturdy back panel or reinforced cross braces can be installed for better load distribution.
- Drilling cable holes is easily possible but requires the right tools (hole saw or Forstner bit).
- Don’t forget ventilation – devices need sufficient air circulation.
- Finally, some drawers can be partially removed to create space for additional equipment.
This approach is proven and mostly preserves the structural integrity of the HEMNES dresser.

Here are some basic principles for DIY projects with HEMNES that might be helpful for beginners like you:

- HEMNES is made of solid wood, which makes it easier to work with than particleboard furniture. However, you should always use sharp tools and never saw, drill, or sand without proper safety precautions.
- Before making any modifications, it is advisable to completely disassemble the furniture parts, especially when altering components that affect stability.
- For painting, choose primers and paints specifically designed to adhere well to wood and protect against moisture.
- When drilling cable openings, always pre-drill and deburr the edges.
- Be careful not to interfere with the mechanics of drawers or doors.
