Hello everyone,

I recently purchased several pieces of furniture from the IKEA Hemnes series, which is known for its beech or pine wood appearance. Since I understand how important proper care is for solid wood, I would like to ask specifically about the best care products to keep the wood in optimal condition.

I know that Hemnes furniture is usually treated with either lacquer or oil, but I have read that some cleaners or polishes can damage the surface or attack the finish. My main concern is protecting the wood from drying out, stains, and scratches without affecting the natural look or the specific surface treatment.

Which products would you recommend for daily or regular care of Hemnes wooden furniture? Are there certain ingredients or product properties I should definitely look out for? And how often should the furniture ideally be maintained?

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Basically, IKEA Hemnes furniture is usually finished either with clear lacquer or oil, and less commonly only oiled without sealing. Therefore, care products should be chosen that do not damage these surfaces.

For lacquered Hemnes pieces, I recommend mild cleaning agents without alcohol or solvents. A neutral, water-based wood cleaner specifically designed for lacquered surfaces protects the finish and ensures gentle cleaning.

For oiled surfaces, a special wood care oil is preferred, which preserves the natural grain and nourishes the wood. Products containing natural linseed oil or tung oil are suitable here.

I advise against aggressive polishes, as they often contain waxes or silicones that create layers and can cause long-term damage. It is also important not to apply care products too frequently – an application every two to three months is usually sufficient, depending on the furniture’s use.

In short:
  • For lacquered surfaces: mild wood cleaner, no solvents
  • For oiled surfaces: care oil with natural linseed or tung oil
  • No aggressive polishes or waxes

Always test any care product on an inconspicuous spot first.

This is a crucial point that many underestimate. Especially with Hemnes furniture, where the wood surface is protected by lacquer or oil, using unsuitable products can lead to so-called “interlayers.” These are residues that build up, sealing the original material over time and potentially changing or even discoloring the wood surface.

When it comes to oil care, this works best as a multi-step process:
  • First, thoroughly clean the surface. It is best to use a mild soap solution (e.g., pH-neutral furniture soap) or a cleaner specially formulated for wood.
  • Then, gently sand the surface with a microfiber cloth or very fine sandpaper (grit 220 or finer) to remove old care films and roughen the wood for the new oil.
  • After that, apply the care oil thinly and evenly, preferably with a soft, lint-free cloth. Wipe off excess oil after about 15 minutes.
  • To improve durability, it is recommended to repeat the oiling 2-3 times with intervals of a few hours.

Another important consideration: What kind of use and location do the furniture have? For heavy use or in sunlit rooms, more frequent maintenance—perhaps every 6-8 weeks—is advisable. Less frequently used furniture usually needs care only every 3-6 months.

It would be interesting to know exactly which type of Hemnes furniture is being used and how intensively, to tailor the recommendations more precisely.

For Hemnes wood, it is best to use high-quality olive oil or special furniture oil from a professional supplier, avoiding harsh cleaners.

Dust regularly and apply oil every 3 to 4 months. This keeps the surface protected and prevents the wood from drying out.
