dragrant6723 Jul 2022 18:26Hello everyone,
I am planning to use some Billy bookcases from IKEA in my small apartment, as space is really limited. My question is: Which Billy bookcase models work best in small rooms that are rather narrow or have limited floor space? I am particularly interested in whether narrower or taller versions are more practical, and how to use the bookcases optimally to maximize storage without overwhelming the room. If you have any experience with widths, heights, or accessories like doors or inserts, I would greatly appreciate concrete tips.
Thanks in advance for your opinions and experiences!

Hello dragrant67,
I think your question is very important, especially for people dealing with small spaces.
I personally have a 40 cm (16 inches) wide Billy shelf at home because there simply wasn’t more room available. What helped me a lot was building the shelf rather tall (about 202 cm (79 inches)) and using additional small boxes and baskets to reduce clutter. The depth of 28 cm (11 inches) fits perfectly into small corners without making the space feel cramped.
However, I also noticed that using doors can help make the shelf look visually calmer. I had the glass doors myself, which look visually lighter than solid ones. Maybe that can be a helpful suggestion for you. I always find it a balancing act between maximizing storage space and keeping it from feeling too bulky ;-)

reoleon4724 Jul 2022 09:22Hey dragrant67, that’s a really interesting question! 🙂 I have several Billy units of different widths myself, and for small rooms, the narrow version with a width of 40 cm (15.7 inches) works best. You can fit it into almost any corner, which is fantastic!
At first, I also wondered whether taller or wider shelves are better. My experience: taller shelves are preferable because otherwise you lose too much floor space. Using the height up to 202 cm (79.5 inches) provides plenty of room for books, decorations, and even boxes.
Regarding accessories, I really like the adjustable shelves since they allow you to stay flexible with multiple levels. Also: doors—especially since open shelving often looks too bulky and busy. The "Billy-Oxberg" doors are perfect for small rooms! So: narrow and tall Billy units, preferably with doors. That gives you more storage space while still keeping the room looking uncluttered! ;-)

when considering the question "Which Billy bookcases are best suited for small rooms?" it is important to approach the planning systematically.
First, note that the standard Billy bookcases come in widths of 40 cm and 80 cm. For small rooms, the 40 cm version is generally recommended. It not only saves space but also integrates well with other furniture without overcrowding the room.
The heights are also available in standard sizes of approximately 106 cm and 202 cm (42 inches and 79.5 inches). The taller option is especially suitable for small spaces as it makes use of vertical space. Often, not enough attention is given to utilizing height. Accessories such as drawers or doors can also be added here.
I completely agree with this. Additionally, you should prefer the 28 cm (11 inches) depth due to its low space consumption, as there are deeper versions that can be more cumbersome in small rooms.
For practical use, I recommend using internal boxes and adjustable shelves to organize storage space efficiently. Doors can help make the bookcase look less cluttered.
Summary:
1. Width: 40 cm (16 inches)
2. Height: 202 cm (79.5 inches) (to maximize room height usage)
3. Depth: 28 cm (11 inches)
4. Accessories: doors (glass or wood), shelves, boxes
If possible, measure your room beforehand and consider working with sketches prior to purchase to find the best placement. Good luck with your selection!
