Hello everyone, I am planning to redesign our living room and came across the BILLY bookcases from IKEA. Since there is quite a wide selection, I’m wondering which BILLY bookcases are particularly suitable for the living room, especially regarding stability, appearance, and usability for different purposes (e.g., books, decoration, media devices). I’m also interested in whether there are versions that are easier to combine with other furniture or that can gain special functions through accessories. Thanks for your experience and tips!

For living rooms, I recommend glass doors that don’t make the space feel cramped but keep dust out.I can only confirm that. Additional tip: If you want storage both for decorative items and books, the half-height versions (106 cm (42 inches)) combined with top shelves are sufficient. This keeps the proportions balanced and avoids monotonous wall units.
For a cozy living room, I recommend the dimensions 80x28 cm (31½x11 inches), as the 40 cm (16 inches) deep ones offer a lot of space but can quickly seem too bulky.
One more thing about combining with other furniture: The white BILLY units fit almost anywhere, but with wood tones you should carefully compare the shades to avoid disrupting the room’s style.

BILLY is more static and less modularThat's true, and somehow that's part of its charm. Sometimes you don't need adaptable furniture, but rather a solid, timeless classic that lasts for decades. For living rooms, all variations work well, but my tip is to combine open shelves with closed elements (doors, boxes). This way, you can flexibly showcase your favorite items in your personal living space while simply hiding the less attractive things. Oh, and good luck to everyone with the wall mounting – once the shelf is installed, almost anything is possible! 🙂

BILLY Standard in white with glass doorsI agree with that. The combination is both elegant and practical. Additionally, the shelving unit appears less bulky, which is often advantageous in living rooms. Tip: For media devices, it’s best to keep the doors open occasionally to prevent heat buildup.
