ᐅ What type of screws should I use for assembling Ikea Besta units in a child's bedroom?

Hello everyone, I am currently setting up the children’s room and have chosen the Ikea Besta system because it seems flexible and fairly sturdy. Now the question is what type of screws would be best to securely fasten the cabinets to the wall. It is important to me that they are suitable for the load in a children’s room, where the furniture might occasionally take minor impacts and high safety must be ensured. Since Ikea often provides only limited guidance with their products, I hope to get recommendations here regarding the type, length, and material of screws for a stable and secure attachment. Are there any experiences with whether standard chipboard screws are sufficient or if special heavy-duty screws make sense? And what else should I consider to avoid “wobbly” furniture in the children’s room?
One thing I would like to add from my experience: With Ikea Besta furniture, the pre-drilled holes are often not designed for thick or very long screws. Therefore, I recommend using the original screws for the furniture connections (those used during assembly) whenever possible, or equivalent chipboard screws with a thickness of 4–5 mm and a length of 3–4 cm (1.2–1.6 inches) instead.
For wall mounting, however, longer screws are necessary to ensure a secure anchoring in the brick wall.
This is really important because if the screw is tightened too much, the chipboard or MDF will easily break. So use moderate force, tighten evenly, and rather use several screws to distribute the load.

Tighten the screws firmly, but not so tight that you damage the wood or chipboard or strip the thread.

Additionally, I recommend increasing stability with angle brackets or sturdy supports if space allows. This can make a big difference in the long term, especially where children are involved and furniture is often moved or subjected to stress.
Regarding screws: stainless steel or galvanized screws are the best choice to prevent rust.
Also, pay attention to proper drilling: precise drilling and choosing the correct anchor length are essential for secure fastening. For brick walls, well-fitting nylon anchors of the appropriate length work best.

Hello, I would like to briefly summarize a few basic rules that are often overlooked:
- Securing furniture to the wall is essential in children’s rooms to prevent tipping.
- Screws for connecting furniture and for wall mounting have different requirements: use the original screws or appropriate chipboard screws for the furniture.
- For the wall, it is best to use screws with a diameter of 5-6 mm and a length of at least 6 cm (2.4 inches), along with suitable anchors matched to your brick wall.
- Stainless steel or galvanized screws ensure durability.
That is basically true, but rust-resistant screws help avoid unexpected problems and are certainly advisable for children’s rooms, even if there is no direct moisture.
If you have any further questions, I’m happy to help!

Stainless steel is good but not strictly necessary if the area is not damp.
