Hello everyone,

Over the past few weeks, I assembled an Ikea Brimnes shelving unit, but I noticed that the shelves are somewhat wobbly. Specifically, the middle shelves tend to bend slightly under load and feel a bit unstable. I have tightened all the screws and installed the brackets according to the instructions. However, the connection to the side panels doesn’t seem to be sufficiently rigid.

I’m interested in the most effective ways to improve the shelf stability without having to dismantle and completely rebuild the unit. Has anyone had experience with additional reinforcements, such as corner brackets, extra wood supports, or other solutions? Or could this be an assembly issue that can be resolved with some fine adjustments?

I would appreciate tips that can be done without special tools. Thanks in advance!

I would recommend first tightening all the screws thoroughly and checking the drill holes for any damage. Often, loose shelf supports are the cause of the wobbling effect.

If that is not enough, simple metal brackets can be installed on the inside of the sides to significantly improve stability.

Hello Bopineo,

I understand your problem well; Brimnes shelves can sometimes feel a bit unstable. Here is a structured suggestion on how to proceed:

- Check that all shelves are correctly seated in the dowel holes and that the brackets are fixed exactly in the intended positions.
- Inspect the stability of the side panels, as they affect the overall load-bearing capacity. Especially with thinner furniture panels, slight wobbling can occur.
- If you expect more weight, I recommend attaching L-shaped metal brackets to the back of the shelves where they meet the side panels. This will help distribute the load better.
- Another option is to screw thin wooden battens underneath the shelves, providing additional cross reinforcement and preventing sagging.

Important: Use a good cordless drill and tighten the screws cleanly and evenly to avoid damaging the furniture components.

In summary, a combination of careful assembly checking and small reinforcements is usually enough to eliminate wobbling. If the structure is already heavily loaded, only additional wood protection will provide long-term stability.

Honestly, just retightening screws is often more cosmetic than a real solution. Ikea furniture like Brimnes is mass-produced—so you can’t expect miracles.

That’s true, but even then, the materials often aren’t designed for heavy loads or intensive use.

I suggest keeping expectations for Ikea shelves realistic: wobbly shelves are often related to material thickness, not just assembly. If you need more stability, the right step is to upgrade to a higher quality shelf or build your own—otherwise, small reinforcements will only keep you in repair mode.

If you definitely want to make the shelf sturdier, you might consider replacing the shelves with thicker boards and completely redoing the connections with metal brackets. That sounds elaborate, but the result is no longer a compromise.
