Hello everyone,
I recently received an IKEA Hemnes wardrobe, and unfortunately, I noticed some damage to the edges during unpacking and assembly. The damage includes surface scratches as well as small cracks and dents on the wood edges.
Since I would like to keep the wardrobe, I am wondering how to best repair or conceal these typical edge damages without having to replace the entire piece.
Do you have experience with suitable products or techniques to carry out a visually appealing and durable repair on the rather delicate edges of the Hemnes wardrobe?
Tips on recommended products (such as special wood fillers, touch-up markers, repair kits) would also be appreciated, as well as advice on whether it’s better to seek professional help or if it can be done well as a DIY project.
Thank you in advance for your support!

Hello benedicton,
let me offer you a small step-by-step tutorial that can help you repair the damaged edges of your Hemnes cabinet:
- Step 1: Damage Assessment
Carefully examine the type of damage: scratches, dents, or cracks. Make a note of these.
- Step 2: Preparation
Lightly sand the edges to remove loose paint or splinters. Use fine sandpaper (grain 220).
- Step 3: Filler Application
For cracks and dents, use a high-quality, solvent-free wood filler. Smooth the filler with a putty knife and let it dry (minimum 2-4 hours).
- Step 4: Fine Sanding
After it has fully dried, sand the repaired area smooth again.
- Step 5: Color Matching
Use a furniture touch-up pen in a matching color to retouch the repaired area. Test the result first on an inconspicuous spot.
- Step 6: Sealing
Then apply a matte clear coat to make the surface more durable.
- Step 7: Care
After drying, optionally treat the edges with furniture wax or wood oil.
Mistakes to avoid:
- Using sandpaper that is too coarse, which could further damage the edges.
- Applying color too quickly before the filler has completely dried.
- Using colors that do not match and stand out immediately.
Good luck! If you have any questions, I’m happy to help.

IKEA sometimes replaces parts if the damage was caused during delivery. This is an important point. It is essential to check if the damage is covered under the warranty or return period. Often, repair is the practical solution, but sometimes a free replacement is the better option.
Has benedicton already contacted IKEA regarding the edge damage?
