Hello everyone, I have several Billy bookcases from IKEA that I would like to stabilize better, as they sometimes wobble or rock under load. What proven techniques are there to make these shelves safer and more stable? It is especially important to have durable and simple solutions, ideally without heavily modifying the bookcase or damaging the material. It would be great if you could also point out possible issues or limitations of the different methods. Thanks in advance for your helpful tips!

A reinforced back panel made of plywood is actually one of the best measures if you aim for long-lasting stability.

Procedure:
1. Carefully remove the back panel from the shelf. BILLY has a thin back panel that is usually just slotted in.
2. Measure the back panel precisely and order or have a plywood sheet cut to size.
3. Insert the plywood panel into the shelf and fix it inside with small screws or furniture brackets (make sure not to drive the screws through the wood to the outside).

This modification significantly reduces wobbling, especially for tall shelves. Additionally, small brackets can be installed on the upper back corners inside to further reinforce the shelf.

How complicated is it to implement the plywood panel?
It is a small modification but quite doable with a screwdriver, drill, and some basic DIY skills.

I would like to add some practical tips for wall mounting and stabilization to ensure the shelf remains secure even under heavy load.

First, check the included anchors and screws for wall mounting. For concrete walls, nylon anchors and 6mm (1/4 inch) screws are common, but heavier-duty anchors can provide better support.

Additionally, it is advisable to screw the mounting screws into the wall studs whenever possible, rather than just into the filler or joints. A small magnet or an electronic stud finder is a useful tool to accurately locate the studs.

You can also attach small adjustable plastic feet to the bottom edge of the shelf. This allows you to precisely level the shelf, which in turn improves stability against wobbling.

If you choose a plywood back panel, don’t forget to lightly sand and finish the surface with paint or oil to protect the wood from moisture.

Secure the wall properly, avoid overloading the shelves, and store heavy items at the bottom. Additionally, you can install brackets at the top and bottom inside the unit. This is usually sufficient.
