I recently assembled a Billy shelf from Ikea, but it feels quite wobbly and overall not very stable. This issue mainly occurs when the shelf is loaded with heavier items or when it is touched lightly. Although the back panel appears to be installed, the shelf still moves noticeably, which worries me, especially regarding safety with small children in the home.

I’m interested in any options to make the shelf more stable without having to completely disassemble it or buy a new one. Are there any special tips for reinforcement, tightening, or other advice you could recommend?

Perhaps someone has experience with similar problems with Billy shelves or comparable models. Thanks in advance to everyone who can help!

This is a very important point. In my experience, the stability of Billy shelves largely depends on the proper attachment of the back panel. I would first check whether the back panel is correctly and fully secured.

Additionally, it is worth considering whether the shelf is standing evenly on the floor or if it may be placed unevenly. Have you checked the base surface? Even small irregularities can cause wobbling without the shelf itself being poorly assembled.

Furthermore, I would question the tools used and the quality of the screws – not all Ikea screws provide long-lasting stability.

I can fully agree with Neogi’s suggestion. Additionally, I can offer the following tips:

1. Use a spirit level to check if the Billy shelf is standing on a flat surface – small unevenness can be compensated for by placing thin felt pads under the feet.

2. Tighten all screws again with the appropriate tool. Ikea designs the furniture so that there is often some play during the initial fine adjustments.

3. If the shelf is placed against a wall, attaching brackets to the back and to the wall itself is a very effective measure that increases stability significantly.

4. In the case of the back panel, check whether it is thin or loose. Sometimes securing it with rivets or adding small nails can help fix it better.

Check and tighten the back panel.
Inspect the floor covering for unevenness.
If necessary, install angle brackets on the wall.
Align or adjust the shelf legs.
That should be sufficient.

I had exactly the same wobbling problem with my Billy. 🙂 First of all: stay calm!

What helped me was sticking small felt pads under the front feet on the bottom – this evened out any unevenness in the floor and noticeably reduced the wobbling.

I also completely disassembled the back panel and reinstalled it, using a hammer to firmly drive in the panel nails. Just pressing them in wasn’t enough; they were partially loose.

One more tip: if you can secure the shelf to the wall, use the Ikea wall brackets—they really provide significantly more stability. Otherwise, Billy can be quite sensitive when left standing on its own 😉

That matches my experience. Additionally:

Sometimes the shelves are not fully or properly snapped into place. This can also affect stability, as they reinforce the outer structure.

Furthermore, a taller shelving unit without wall anchoring can tend to be unstable. Is your Billy the standard 80x28x202 cm (31.5x11x79.5 inches) model or a smaller one?

Another option is to install additional metal brackets inside the side panels if the construction feels too loose. However, this requires a bit more tools and some DIY skill.
