Hello everyone,

I recently bought painted BILLY shelves and now I’m wondering how to best care for them to keep the paint in good condition and looking nice for as long as possible. I’m especially interested in which cleaning products are truly suitable, how often it makes sense to clean them, and whether there are any special care instructions for painted furniture surfaces that should be followed.

I’ve noticed that some cleaning agents can damage the paint. Therefore, I’m looking for recommendations for gentle treatments that won’t ruin the shine or protective coating.

What care products or methods do you use for painted BILLY shelves, and what should definitely be avoided?

Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hey Ilan45,

it’s great that you’re already thinking about how to care for your painted BILLY shelves! 😊 My recommendation is to use a soft, slightly damp microfiber cloth to wipe the surfaces. This helps prevent scratches and protects the paint very well.

Very important: Avoid using harsh cleaners or abrasive materials, as they can really damage the paint!

A small tip: If you wring out the cloth thoroughly, you can prevent moisture damage while keeping the shelves perfectly clean.

Good luck and enjoy your shelves! 🙂

It is best to wipe regularly with a damp cloth, avoiding any harsh cleaning agents. This is completely sufficient.

Hello Ilan45,

I would like to take the opportunity to address some technical details that are especially important when caring for painted BILLY shelves.

The surface of BILLY shelves is usually coated with an acrylic varnish, which is sensitive to solvents and harsh cleaners. Therefore, I recommend avoiding any cleaning products containing alcohol or ammonia, as these can damage and fade the finish.

It is better to clean the shelves with warm water mixed with a mild soap or a neutral cleaner. Use a soft cloth or sponge that is only lightly dampened to avoid trapping moisture. After cleaning, always wipe down with a dry, soft cloth to prevent water spots.

It would also be helpful to know if the shelf is placed in direct sunlight or in a particularly humid room. UV light can cause the finish to fade over the years, and high humidity increases the risk of damage to the coating.

Can you provide more information on this? Is the shelf located in a highly exposed area? Also, is the shelf used heavily or mainly for decorative purposes?

This will help give more precise care recommendations.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! The shelf is placed in an area without direct sunlight, so in the living room a bit away from the window. It is used normally, meaning books, folders, and occasionally decorations are placed on it—nothing extremely heavy or subject to heavy wear.

The room’s humidity level is fairly normal—no basement-like conditions or similar. I do try to avoid harsh cleaning agents but haven’t purchased any special care products yet.

Do you think an occasional polish might be useful to maintain the shine, or would that be risky for this type of surface?

Hello Ilan45,

Here is a brief, structured care guide for your painted BILLY shelves, based on your situation:

1. Cleaning:
- Use a dust-free, soft microfiber cloth, preferably slightly damp, to remove dust and dirt.
- Then use only pH-neutral cleaning agents or mild dish soap diluted in water.

2. Polishing:
- For lacquered surfaces, a special water-based furniture polish usually works well. Caution: Avoid wax polishes or oil-based products, as they can dull the finish.
- Polishing once every few months (maximum 2-3 times per year) can help maintain the shine.

3. Precautions:
- Do not expose the shelves to direct sunlight.
- Avoid high humidity or heat sources nearby.
- Do not use sharp tools or harsh cleaning agents.

Summary: Keep it simple. Gentle cleaning, minimal polishing, and no unnecessary extras.

If you want, I can also recommend specific products based on my personal experience.
